Stiedra: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Stiedra
Štědrá brings together buildings from different centuries in its local history, while forests and ponds shape the surrounding landscape. This gives you two distinct interests to consider when planning your trip: the development of the church, castle and fortifications, and the connection with cycling tourism.
Landscape and Cycling
Štědrá is surrounded by forest and numerous ponds. This setting is particularly well suited to cycling tourism. Alongside the historical sites, this offers a distinct focus on the landscape for planning your trip: you can consider cultural history and cycling as separate reasons to choose Štědrá as a destination.
Church and Castle: Building History in Several Phases
The parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in the upper part of the municipality, west of the village square, in the first third of the 14th century and was originally Gothic. After a fire in 1680, it was remodeled and extended in the Baroque style. The exterior facades and windows were renovated in 1718. After 1995, the church was completely reconstructed. This sequence distinguishes its medieval origins from the later building phases. The church is occasionally accessible; check access before planning a visit.
The Baroque Château Štědrá was built in the western part of Štědrá between 1730 and 1734. Count Ferdinand Jakub Kokořovec z Kokořova had it built; the design may have been based on a plan by the architect Tomáš Haffenecker. After a fire in 1744, the château was restored and extended in the Late Baroque style. Its building history therefore began later than that of the parish church and includes a further alteration after its original construction. The château is occasionally open to the public during cultural events. If you would like to visit, check whether access is available in connection with the event in question.
Two Distinct Historical Sites
The Gothic fortress of Štědrá was founded on a hillside in the eastern part of the village no later than the early 13th century. Extensive remains of the fortifications have survived to this day. It should be distinguished as a separate historical site from the château, which was built later: the château dates only from the 18th century and is located in the western part of Štědrá.
Štědrý Hrádek, a small Gothic castle on a steep rocky spur above the Borecký potok, also stood near Štědrá. It had two ditches and was probably founded in the mid-14th century. While the fortress of Štědrá dates back to no later than the early 13th century, Štědrý Hrádek probably belongs to a later period. The two names therefore refer to different sites and distinct historical contexts.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit

If you are looking for a hotel in Stiedra, the different focuses of your trip can help guide your plans: the local architectural history, occasional public access to the buildings mentioned, subject to the relevant conditions, or the surroundings shaped by forests and ponds.
