Lichtenstadt: Cultural Sites and Excursions
Accommodation in Lichtenstadt
For a stay in Lichtenstadt, you can choose from cultural and historical sites, an annual event in August and outdoor destinations. You can plan your trip around a festival date or focus on culture and outdoor activities. Access and seasonality also matter for some individual visits.
Cultural History and City Festivals
The Jewish cemetery lies on the northern edge of the town. Its tombstones date from the 17th to the 20th century; the grounds include a gate and a perimeter wall. The town describes it as one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Central Europe and recommends it as a tourist destination. The cemetery is locked, but a key can be borrowed from the municipal office. Since access arrangements can change, check before visiting whether this key arrangement is still in place. For those interested in cultural history, both the tombstones’ long span of dates and the enclosing wall are central features.
St. Peter and Paul Church offers a medieval point of interest. The Teplá Monastery founded it in the early 13th century; the Romanesque building was completed in 1217. These two dates mark different stages: the founding was the beginning, while 1217 marks the completion of the Romanesque building. The church is preserved, but open only occasionally. If you plan to visit, check whether access is possible. The Flaschner Chapel of the Assumption of Mary was restored in 2015. Compared with the medieval history of St. Peter and Paul, the chapel’s restoration is a more recent point of reference.
The town festivals are held every year on the last Saturday in August and include a cultural and music program. Since 2011, they have featured the Krušnohorská bramboračka cooking competition, in which potato soup is prepared in a cauldron. The fixed Saturday gives your visit a specific timeframe; individual program details may vary. If the festival is the deciding factor for your trip, check the program shortly beforehand.
Leisure, Circular Trails and Getting There
The VelkĂ˝ RybnĂk recreation area lies south of Lichtenstadt. It is suitable for summer fishing, cycling, mushroom picking and hiking.
The first circular trail, “HroznÄ›tĂnská zastavenĂ,” is a 4 km loop with ten information-board stops. The route includes the Gloriett viewpoint, from which the view extends from the southern Ore Mountains to Karlovy Vary. You can therefore choose between a set circular route with a viewpoint and an area offering a range of summer activities. Before setting out, check the current route, as the trail or information boards may change.
