Smolné Pece was historically known by the German name Pechöfen. The village lies in an extensive clearing on the northern slope of Hamerský vrch; slightly more than half of its area is forested. It also has a geological site associated with pegmatite mining and evidence of historical resin processing. Smolné Pece is a popular recreation area and offers a pleasant setting for relaxation and excursions in the surrounding area. The landscape, geology, local history and community life can each be a distinct focus when planning your trip.

Forest, Clearing and Location

Smolné Pece lies amid unspoiled nature in an extensive clearing on the northern slope of Hamerský vrch. Slightly more than half of the area of Smolné Pece is forested. The clearing describes the immediate setting, while the forest cover refers to the municipality as a whole. For your travel plans, the hillside location indicates where Smolné Pece lies in the landscape; the forest cover adds a picture at the municipal level.

Pegmatite Mining and Geological Site

The geological site of Smolné Pece lies in a forest, 0.5 km south of the shop in the village centre. It comprises surface mining sites and overgrown spoil heaps from pegmatite mining. The site provides access to an outcrop of the largest pegmatite body found so far in the Nejdek Massif. This brings both the geological significance of the outcrop and the traces of mining into focus: the mining sites and spoil heaps are associated with pegmatite extraction.

Resin Processing and Local History

The suspected historical predecessors of Smolné Pece included huts belonging to resin producers. Historical pitch ovens were used either to refine raw resins by melting them in special ovens, or resin was produced as a by-product of charcoal making in charcoal kilns. In the first method, resin was the material being processed; in the second, it was an additional by-product of charcoal production. Resin-rich wood from spruce and other conifers was an important prerequisite for setting up pitch ovens. Thus, local history connects resin processing with wood as a raw material and the importance of resin-rich conifers.

Community Life and Leisure

The municipality regularly holds cultural and social events. These include raising the maypole in connection with the burning of witches. If such an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for your travel period.

There is a local pub in the municipal office building. If you plan to visit, check its current opening status in advance, as this may change. Table tennis can be played in the function room for CZK 50 per hour. If you plan the activity as a definite part of your trip, check beforehand whether it will be available during your visit.

There is a children's playground with play equipment in front of the municipal office; the facilities may change over time. Nohejbal is the main sport played on the sports field. Together with the regular events, these facilities show another side of Smolné Pece beyond its landscape and local history.
