Schneidmühl: Cycling Routes, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Schneidmühl
Schneidmühl (Pila) offers several reasons to visit, with cycling, woodland scenery and local history at its heart. Two named cycling routes pass through the town: National Cycle Route No. 39 and a regional section of the European long-distance cycling route EV4. The surrounding area is also shaped by meadows, pastures and extensive forests. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose one based on the themes you want to shape your stay: cycling trips, forest trails or a closer look at Pila’s history.
Landscape and nature around Pila
Pila lies on the slopes above the floodplains of the Lomnický potok stream. Meadows, pastures and extensive forests surround the town, while low hills also limit direct views of the neighbouring municipalities. The forests have numerous paths for outings and walks. Conditions on individual trails are important when planning specific trips and may change, so check them before making your plans.
One clearly defined natural feature is the Hořečková louka na Pile natural monument, covering an area of 1.5932 hectares. It protects species-rich meadows and pastures with endangered plant communities, as well as specially protected plant species. For nature enthusiasts, this combination of protected plants and meadow and pastureland is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the forest trails.
Cycling: two routes through Pila
When planning your route, distinguish between the two routes. National Cycle Route No. 39 passes through Pila along the Karlovy Vary–Bochov–Chyše route. The regional section of the European long-distance cycling route EV4 runs from Karlovy Vary via Kolová and Pila to Dlouhá Lomnice and Bochov. The named places differ: Chyše is included in the route given for No. 39, while the EV4 description names Kolová and Dlouhá Lomnice. Plan your stages according to the route you choose, and check the conditions on each route before setting out.
Cyclists can use an e-bike charging station at Pilská hospoda. Pilská hospoda also offers services year-round for day-trippers, regular guests and organised groups. As the charging station’s availability and operating arrangements may change, check the latest information in advance about the service you wish to use.
Local history and traditions
Pila’s early history includes a mill on the Lomnický potok stream and a sawmill established there. The sawmill probably gave its name to the settlement that later developed. From the 1880s onwards, intensive mining developed in Pila, extracting lignite and, above all, wax coal. A wax factory and a briquette factory were associated with the mining industry. Operations connected with these factories ended in 1968, after suitable reserves had been exhausted.
A well-known local tradition is the Masopust carnival procession. Dates may vary, so if you would like to include a procession in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
A place in the surrounding area
The municipality of Pila names Bečov nad Teplou as a nearby place of historical and natural interest.
