Grasengrün: Nature, Cycling Route and Local History
Accommodation in Grasengrün
Grasengrün as a destination
Obora Hájek, the nature trail of the same name and the “Okolo obory Hájek” cycling loop offer specific ways to explore nature and go cycling. Hájek railway station is a useful reference point for planning rail travel. The chapel and water castle provide historical points of interest from very different periods. This makes it possible to explore Grasengrün through more than just a single activity.
Wildlife reserve and cycling routes
The Obora Hájek wildlife reserve is located on the edge of the municipality of Hájek. It extends between the municipalities of Hájek, Sadov and Velký Rybník and covers 418 hectares. Fallow deer and mouflons can be observed in the reserve. If observing animals is important to your trip, treat it as a possibility: check local information about wildlife sightings and visitor access before travelling. For context, 418 hectares is equivalent to 4.18 square kilometres; this figure refers to the area of the reserve, not the length of a trail.
Starting and ending at the entrance gate to the wildlife reserve, the Obora Hájek nature trail begins and ends in the municipality of Hájek and is approximately 5.2 kilometres long in total. The “Okolo obory Hájek” cycling loop is an easy 18-kilometre circuit, better suited to mountain bikes. It runs along the wildlife reserve to Hájek. At 18 kilometres, the cycling loop is more than three times as long as the approximately 5.2-kilometre nature trail. This allows you to compare two different activities and their respective distances. Access and route conditions can change, so check local information before visiting or setting out.
Getting there by train
Hájek railway station is on line 140 between Chomutov, Karlovy Vary and Cheb. It is also part of the integrated transport system. Both the line information and the station’s connection to the network are relevant when planning your trip. The places mentioned help put the route into context. As rail services can change, check the current timetable for your travel date.
Local history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
The Gothic water castle of Hájek was built in the 14th century as the seat of the local Loket fief holders. This historical connection links the castle’s architectural form with its former function as a seat of lordship. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Hájek dates from a much later period: it is a small religious building from the first half of the 19th century and a protected cultural monument. Several centuries separate the construction of the water castle from the building of the chapel. Together, these two landmarks offer a historical perspective spanning medieval lordship and a later religious building. For a stay that includes history as well as nature and cycling, they provide two clearly distinct points of interest.
