Sichlau: Churches, Chapels and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Sichlau
For your plans in Sichlau, there are several themes to choose from: the 32 km Cesta z města 8 cycling route, historic religious buildings, and opportunities for fishing and play. The attractions are not all in the same place. The cemetery with the Church of All Saints is about 1 km northeast of Čichalov, on higher ground; the watermill and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary are about 1.1 km west of Čichalov, in a deep valley. These different locations can help you fit the cycling route, architectural history and individual visits into your own plans for your stay.
Cycling Route and Activities in Sichlau
The Cesta z města 8 cycling route passes through Žlutice, Čichalov, Chyše, Močidlec and Kobylé before returning to Žlutice. It is 32 km long in total. A downloadable audio guide is available for the route. Before setting out, check the route details and whether the audio guide is currently available for download.
There are also specific options to consider beyond the cycling route: you can fish in the pond below the cemetery with a valid permit from the pond operator. Check in advance that the permit and applicable fishing conditions are suitable for your visit. Čichalov also has two modern children's playgrounds. If needed, check their condition and availability before your visit.
Church and Chapels
The Church of All Saints in Čichalov was built in the Gothic style in the first half of the 14th century. It is a valuable example of religious architecture from the time of Charles IV in the area around Žlutice. Its construction period and style provide a specific historical context for a visit to the church.
The village chapel in Čichalov offers a different architectural feature: it is Baroque and was built in the 17th century. Today it is dedicated to Saints John and Paul; originally, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The areas outside the chapel are accessible. The building is dilapidated, so check the situation on site before visiting.
The Mill and Chapel of the Virgin Mary in the Valley
Čichalovský mlýn is a watermill on the left bank of the Malá Trasovka stream, in a deep valley about 1.1 km west of Čichalov. The mill was first recorded on the map of the first Josephine military survey of the land, dating from 1764–1768. This historical context also makes the site interesting to travellers who want to learn about the older use of the landscape as well as the architecture of the churches. The ruins of Čichalovský mlýn are freely accessible.
At the entrance to Čichalovský mlýn No. 29, master miller Wenzl Pleyer had a stone chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built in the second half of the 19th century. It, too, is in the deep valley of the Malá Trasovka stream, about 1.1 km west of Čichalov. Only the enclosing walls of the former chapel remain, up to their original height; the roof and roof structure are missing. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is currently in a dilapidated state. Check the situation on site before visiting, and take its structural condition into account when planning your visit.
