Žlutice combines medieval architectural history with a museum, recurring cultural events, and trails in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, you can consider these topics separately: from the historic center to the museum’s seasonal opening hours and the different routes to Vladař.

Medieval Traces in the Townscape

Žlutice is an important medieval town with a rectangular layout and a large Gothic church. Remains of Gothic fortifications have been preserved in the historic center. The Church of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most valuable architectural monuments in the Karlovy Vary Region. Together, these buildings offer a tangible impression of the town’s historical significance, without reducing its individual sights to a single era.

Another cultural heritage item is the Žlutice Hymnal, a national cultural monument kept at the Museum of Czech Literature. A complete facsimile is available for all visitors to view at the Žlutice Museum. This allows you to examine the design of this important manuscript while the original remains at its stated place of safekeeping.

Museum, Events, and Walking Trail

A visit to the Žlutice Museum includes underground rooms with a lapidarium. The museum is open from May to September and closed from October 1 to April 30. If you want to plan your stay around a museum visit, check the official seasonal opening information before travelling. The facsimile of the hymnal and the underground rooms are separate parts of the museum visit.

The annual events calendar includes the Žlutická pouť, the Žlutické divadelní léto amateur theater festival, and the VIVA LA MUSICA choir festival. Dates vary. So check the dates for the year of your trip if you want to plan specifically around one of the festivals.

The Katova Cesta walking trail is five kilometers long and has six stops. At each stop, you can use a QR code to access audio stories in Czech or German about the executioner Johann Christoph Fischer. The choice of languages and the six stops give the trail a clear historical theme; its stated total length can help you fit it into your schedule alongside other planned activities, without assuming a specific walking time.

Trails and Protected Landscape at Vladař

Near Žlutice, Vladař can be reached via a five-kilometer red-marked hiking trail or an 8.3-kilometer yellow-marked hiking trail. Based on the stated distances, the red trail is the shorter of the two options. As trail markings may change, check them before setting out.

The Vladař Nature Reserve includes the summit and its slopes. Established in 1970, it covers more than 227 hectares and protects oak-hornbeam forests, ravine and scree forests, and dry grasslands. The hiking trail distances and the description of the protected areas offer different kinds of orientation: the first compares two route lengths, while the second identifies the protected habitats in the surrounding area.

South of the town, the Late Gothic Nevděk Castle stands on Zámecký vrch above the Střela River. Its location is described by the hill, the river, and its position south of Žlutice. The castle thus adds another historic site in the surrounding area to the medieval buildings in the town center.
