Abertham: Mining History and Trails in the Ore Mountains
Accommodation in Abertham
Abertham (Abertamy) is a mining town in the Ore Mountains. Forested mountain areas characterize the surrounding landscape. The town’s history includes mining and the craft tradition of glove-making; nature trails explore different aspects of the landscape. During your stay, you can therefore choose between local history, specific hiking routes and seasonal winter activities.
Mining History and Townscape
Abertamy was founded as a mining settlement because the area had deposits of silver and tin. It was later elevated to the status of a royal mining town. This development forms the historical context for the local church: the town of Jáchymov built the Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (“Čtrnácti sv. pomocnĂků”) in 1534 on the village square of the newly founded mining settlement. Between 1735 and 1738, it was remodeled in the Baroque style.
The church’s floor plan also offers specific architectural details: it comprises a partially recessed prismatic tower, a single-nave hall and a five-sided chancel. In the wider area, the Abertamy–Božà Dar–Hornà Blatná mining landscape is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It includes Abertamy, including the mining settlement of Hřebečná.
Museum and Cultural Heritage
The Muzeum Abertamy is dedicated to the craft traditions of glove-making and the town’s mining past. Its exhibition includes around 300 items on the history of leather-glove production, as well as a multimedia area featuring a time machine. Another mining-history exhibition displays minerals, most of which come from the Jáchymov region.
Vila Felicitas belongs to the town of Abertamy and is a registered immovable cultural monument. The building is exceptionally well preserved, with many original features intact. If you plan to visit, check the available visiting options in advance.
Mining in the Wider Area
The Důl Mauritius mine is located near Abertamy. It is a national cultural monument and the largest tin mine in the Czech Ore Mountains. The Kryštof Gallery at Důl Mauritius is open to the public from May to September. Before visiting, check the current visiting season and whether a booking is required.
Nature Trails and Hiking Routes
Abertamy offers three nature trails for walkers and hikers. The Plešivec Nature Trail is 8 km long. It crosses wooded terrain to the 1,028 m-high Plešivec, then returns to Abertamy through the BystĹ™ice valley. The HĹ™ebeÄŤná Nature Trail is 3.8 km long, with an 11 km extension around Bludná. The “17 abertamĹłskĂ˝ch zastavenĂ” Nature Trail is 7 km long and follows in the footsteps of Alexander WĂĽst, a photographer from Abertamy who ran a photography school.
For a comparison by distance, the options are 3.8 km, 7 km and 8 km; the Hřebečná Nature Trail also has a longer extension. The Hřebečná Nature Trail includes a stop at Lom Hřebečná. The features described there include a distinctive volcanic-rock ridge with columnar jointing, as well as protected plant and animal communities. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and local signage.
Cycling and Winter Activities
There are cycling routes around Abertamy, and the landscape is crisscrossed by hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing trails. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails are available, though their condition varies by season. Downhill skiing is possible at the Plešivec ski area near Abertamy; operations depend on snow conditions and the current schedule.
When planning your stay, it helps to distinguish between cultural attractions and seasonal activities: the museum, church and mining history are cultural highlights, while mine visits, cross-country ski trails and downhill skiing depend on the season or conditions. Plan your travel dates around the activities that matter most to you, and check visiting or operating conditions in advance.
