For a stay focused on mining heritage, Hřebečná offers a clear theme: tin mining and its traces in the landscape. The mining district represents 400 years of tin mining, from the 16th to the 20th century. Relics of both surface and underground mining have been preserved in the mining landscape. The history also includes trade: tin from Hřebečná was exported through the markets in Nuremberg to almost all of Europe.

Mining History and Landscape

The Důl Mauritius mine was the largest tin mine in the Czech part of the Ore Mountains and was declared a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic in 2014. Two different scales are represented here: the 400 years describe the period covered by the mining district, while the superlative describes the regional significance of a single mine.

The mining water system also shapes the mining landscape. It was constructed from the 16th century onward across an area of 3.5 km² and comprises supply and drainage ditches with a total length of more than 10 km. The area and total length refer to different measurements: the space covered by the system and the combined length of its ditches.

Landforms and Historic Adits

The Schneppova pinka is a land depression about 80 metres long, up to 20 metres wide and up to 20 metres deep. It formed before 1730 through open-pit and underground mining, followed by the collapse of mine workings. The measurements should be read differently: the length is approximate, while the width and depth are maximum values.

In the upper part of the Schneppova pinka, you can trace the course of a greisen vein and part of the old Tagstrecke adit. This adit was constructed in the second half of the 16th century. The Bílá holubice (White Dove) adit is one of the oldest adits in the Zadní Hřebečná tin deposit. It was probably driven at the beginning of the second half of the 16th century.

Tour of the Kryštof Adit

On the tour of the Kryštof adit, you descend 12 metres into the adit. The tour lasts about an hour and follows a 400-metre route. Helmets, lamps, boots and coats are lent to visitors for the tour.

The duration, route length and descent provide different points of reference for planning: about an hour indicates the approximate time required, 400 metres is the route length, and 12 metres is the descent. If you are planning to take the tour, it is advisable to check its current availability in advance.

Geological Landmark Between Ryžovna and Hřebečná

The basalt quarry between Ryžovna and Hřebečná exposes columnar jointing in volcanic rock. It formed as a lava flow cooled. Geological formations therefore provide another theme in the landscape alongside the mining traces, though they should not be confused with relics of tin mining.
