Dallwitz: Trails, Castle Park and History
Accommodation in Dallwitz
In Dallwitz, nature and local history come together. The Dalovice nature trail, the Botanical Garden and the Castle Park each have a different focus: one features circular trails and plant collections, while the others showcase historic buildings, archaeological traces and views. This lets you plan your stay around the topics that interest you most, without conflating the different places and their histories.
Trails and Plants in Dallwitz
The Dalovice nature trail has two circular routes. The longer one passes all ten stations; the shorter skips one station and goes through the town centre. Choosing between them is therefore a matter of both the number of stations and the route through the town: you can explore the complete sequence of stations or take the shorter loop through the centre.
The Dalovice Botanical Garden offers a different way to explore the area. Its collection of regional flora from the KarlovarskĂ˝ kraj comprises around 170 plant species. There is also an outdoor collection of 40 species of agricultural crops. The two collections have different emphases: alongside plants from the regional flora are cultivated plants that grow outdoors. Admission to the Botanical Garden is free.
The route to the Körner oak can also be described precisely: a yellow-marked hiking trail leads there from the main post office. The hike is about 3.1 kilometres long and takes around 47 minutes. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. This time estimate applies to this hike; it should not be confused with the nature trail’s two circular routes.
Castle Park and Historic Sites
In the Castle Park, an observation pavilion offers views of the Ohře valley and Drahovice, a district of Karlovy Vary. The protected Körner oak also stands in the park; its age is estimated at 700 to 900 years. It is freely accessible; check access before your visit, as this may change. The Castle Park, New Castle and bust of K. T. Körner have been listed together as an immovable cultural monument since 1958. The registration number is 38621/7-779.
At Tvrziště, archaeological traces include the remains of a Gothic fortress and the foundations of a square residential tower, presented in situ. Excavations there uncovered Neolithic pottery dating to around 5,000 BC, as well as other small finds from various periods up to modern times. The site thus represents a long span of time: the finds described date back long before the medieval fortress and continue into later periods.
Starý zámek has its own architectural history. It began as an early 16th-century Renaissance fortress and was converted into a Neo-Baroque castle after a fire in 1899. The Neo-Romanesque Church of Panny Marie Utěšitelky was built in 1929; its entrance hall is the former parish chapel. These construction and renovation dates differ from the archaeological finds at Tvrziště and reveal different historical layers of the area.
The Dalovice porcelain factory adds a history of production to this picture. Its output, originally focused on stoneware, increasingly expanded to include porcelain around 1830. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: a specific hike with a stated distance and duration, plant collections, historic architecture and finds from several periods.
