Chyše: Castle History, Brewery and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Chyše
If you are looking for a hotel in Chyše, you can choose where to stay based on your travel interests. Chyše Castle combines architectural history with guided tours of its interiors. Other attractions include the castle brewery, historic monastery and church architecture, and National Cycle Route No. 35, which runs through Chyše. These themes offer different starting points for planning your stay.
Chyše Castle: Building Phases and Interiors
The castle’s history spans a Gothic castle, Renaissance and Baroque forms, and a mid-19th-century conversion in the English Gothic style. This sequence shows that the complex was shaped by several eras; the 19th-century conversion was a later phase in its development.
Guided tours include both representative and private rooms. The tour includes, among other things, Baroque halls, the library, Karel Čapek’s room and a collection of hunting trophies. This way, you can discover different areas of the castle rather than focusing only on its architectural history. As tour content may change, check the current tour details before your visit.
The castle also contains a particularly valuable ceiling oil painting by Petr Brandl, dating from 1699. This dated work adds a specific artistic dimension to the architectural history.
Castle Brewery and Beer from Chyše
The castle brewery is part of the castle complex. Its building was constructed between 1839 and 1841, making it a distinct point of cultural and historical interest alongside the castle rooms.
Advance registration is required for a brewery tour. The tour includes a beer tasting and information about the brewery’s history; visitors can also see a 10-hl brewing system and technical areas, including the fermentation and lagering cellars. The tour thus combines history and insights into brewing technology with a tasting.
Beer from Chyše is brewed according to old Bohemian recipes using Czech and Moravian malts, Saaz hops and spring water from the Doupov Mountains. The beer’s availability may vary.
Monastery, Church and Historic Bells
The former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites is an early Baroque building with four wings and two storeys. It is arranged around a rectangular monastery garden with a cloister and has been a protected monument since 3 May 1958. The garden forms the centre of the complex; the cloister is part of the surrounding layout.
The Church of the Annunciation is a single-nave church, oriented east. Its end is semicircular. The church adjoins the western building of the castle’s outer ward directly. Thus, in addition to its spatial form, its specific architectural connection to the outer ward is part of its architectural context.
A church tower in Chyše also houses two rare bells dating from 1520 and 1572. They are another part of the town’s history; the recorded years give each bell its own date.
Cycling on National Cycle Route No. 35
National Cycle Route No. 35 runs through Chyše on the Valeč–Chyše–Žlutice–Manětín section. The route offers a different reason to visit than the buildings: you can make cycling a focus when choosing your destination. Check current route conditions before setting off.
