Páleč: Church, Fortress Remains and Excursion Routes
Accommodation in Páleč
Páleč combines a valley and stream landscape with historic buildings, a private vehicle collection and local excursion routes. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Páleč, these different themes may play a role in choosing your destination: local history, a visit arranged in advance or a route that starts and ends in Páleč.
Landscape and orientation
Páleč lies in the valley of the Pálečský potok stream. The stream rises at the western municipal boundary, flows east through the municipality to Jarpice and joins the Vranský potok there. The floodplain of the Pálečský potok has riverside vegetation. The landscape is therefore shaped both by the course of the waterway and by the vegetation along its banks. Páleč also lies at the junction of two third-class roads—another specific point of reference in descriptions of the village.
Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built between 1333 and 1338 under Jan IV of Dražice. It was already a parish church in 1384. Its architectural form can be described through several specific features: the church has a single nave, a polygonal chancel and a western tower. “Single nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; the polygonal chancel is a section of the building laid out with several sides.
Individual details add to the picture of the building. The coat of arms of Bishop Jan IV of Dražice is carved above the side entrance. The sacristy contains a Gothic octagonal baptismal font made of pink opuka stone. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the church: its period of construction, its exterior form and the furnishings in the sacristy.
Fortress remains and local history
Remains and ramparts of Páleč’s former fortress are still visible on the rise known as Na hrádku or Hrad. Both names refer to the rise where the remains of the former site are located. Another historical connection is Štěpán of Páleč: he was born in the late 1360s at the fortress in Velká Páleč and became rector of the university in 1400. Alongside the church’s construction history, the fortress and a historical figure associated with Páleč are part of the area’s history.
Vehicle collection and excursion routes
Páleč is home to the Muzeum historických náklaďáků (Museum of Historic Trucks). It is a private collection of utility vehicles belonging to the Slezák family. Personal visits can be arranged in advance with the collection via Facebook; have your appointment confirmed and plan your visit in accordance with the arrangement.
Two local excursion routes are described, both starting and ending in Páleč. One goes through Vraný, Peruc and Vrbičany. The second lists a longer sequence of intermediate places: Vyšínek, Zlonice, Šlapanice, Mšené Lázně, Budyně nad Ohří, Mšené Lázně, Ředhošť, Lukov and Horní Kamenice. Mšené Lázně appears twice in this sequence. The places listed provide a concrete comparison of the two routes: the first passes through three intermediate places, while the second gives a more detailed sequence. Check the route conditions locally before planning your excursion around them.
