Zichovec: Kromlech, Pond and Events
Accommodation in Zichovec
You can get to know Zichovec through several specific points of interest: the Zichovecký kromlech, the pond on the southeastern edge of the village, regular kingfisher sightings, and events throughout the year. You can plan your stay around whether you are more interested in local history, the landscape, fishing or a special type of event. If a festival or a wildlife-watching date is the reason for your trip, check the exact date in advance. When looking for a hotel, it helps to consider the reason for your visit and your planned travel dates together.
The Kromlech and Local History
The Zichovecký kromlech, also known as Kamenný kruh v Zichovci, was built in May 2010 on the outskirts of Zichovec, above the pond. It is a modern reconstruction of prehistoric stone circles, created as an experimental contribution to research into the purpose of Celtic and pre-Celtic structures. The distinction is important: the site is modern, while exploring much older forms of construction. The kromlech therefore offers its own historical and cultural connection, without itself being a prehistoric stone circle.
The village’s history adds two notable dates to this picture. The earliest surviving written mention of Zichovec dates from 1407. On 18 December 1924, Zichovec became an independent municipality. These dates represent different aspects of its history: the written record of the village and, later, its status as an independent municipality.
The Pond, Nature Park and Kingfishers
Zichovecký rybník is located on the southeastern edge of Zichovec. The kromlech stands on the outskirts of the village, above the pond, making these two local features easy to consider together. Zichovec is also on the border of Džbán Nature Park. Kingfishers are regularly seen at the pond. For nature enthusiasts, this adds a specific bird and a clearly identified location to the landscape. The pond is therefore relevant both for local wildlife watching and for the fishing and events described below.
Events and Fishing at Zichovecký rybník
Pálení čarodějnic takes place every spring on the bank of Zichovecký rybník, next to the kromlech. Hvězdný Zichovec is a traditional public event held in Zichovec in autumn. The Moon and several objects in deep space are observed during the event. The events offer different seasonal and thematic highlights: Pálení čarodějnic takes place on the pond bank beside the kromlech, while Hvězdný Zichovec is devoted to observing the sky. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check its exact date in advance.
Sport fishing at Zichovecký rybník is usually practiced on a “catch and release” basis. Check the local fishing rules and arrangements before taking part. Zichovecká 24 is a separate competition format: this traditional carp fishing competition lasts 24 hours and is held at the pond. Each two-person team consists of a local angler and a guest. This distinguishes the usual sport fishing approach from the competition’s special time limit and team format.
Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Zichovec can be reached from the expressway between Prague and Chomutov via the Hořešovice or Panenský Týnec exits. Check road conditions before setting out. If an event is the reason for your trip, include its exact date in your plans.
