Central Bosnia/Central Bosnia Canton: Mountain Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Central Bosnia/Central Bosnia Canton
Central Bosnia/Central Bosnia Canton is predominantly hilly and mountainous. Its elevations range from 300 to 1,922 metres; the Vrbas and Lašva are the canton’s largest rivers. Mountain nature, culture and seasonal night skiing are clear themes for a trip.
Mountain scenery, lake and waterfalls
Prokoško jezero lies on Mount Vranica at an elevation of 1,636 metres. In 2005, the Assembly of Central Bosnia/Central Bosnia Canton declared the natural glacial lake a natural monument. An endemic species of newt is also part of its natural significance. As access conditions can change, check them before your visit.
At Kozica, 11 kilometres from Fojnica, there are several smaller waterfalls and two larger ones. They range in height from 5 to 20 metres. Access is difficult and may change; take this into account when planning and check current conditions before your visit.
Night skiing and relaxation
The Vlašić Ski Centre offers night skiing. Operating hours are seasonal, so check the schedule before your trip. This lets you plan your winter visit around what is actually available on site.
Reumal Fojnica is a modern, specialised facility for rehabilitation, relaxation, active leisure and planned sporting activities. Programmes and availability may change; check the current offers before making plans. Night skiing and the services at Reumal have different focuses: the seasonal schedule is important for one, while the programme available at the time matters for the other.
Museums and historic sites
The Memorijalni muzej Rodna kuća Ive Andrića has a permanent exhibition on the life and literary work of Ivo Andrić. The exhibition brings together biographical and literary themes, complementing the nature and winter sports offerings with a cultural focus.
Stari grad Fortress was built in the second half of the 14th century or the first half of the 15th century. Permanent exhibitions are presented in the Kula and the Baruthana. The fortress is open to visitors year-round; check its current opening status before your visit.
In Jajce, the Pliva Waterfall is in the city centre, and the Jajce Fortress is part of the medieval town complex. The Catacombs of Jajce are an underground church or burial site carved into the solid rock. The local cuisine also offers a regional speciality: Jajce trout is recommended as a dish to try. Availability in restaurants may change, so it is worth asking if you plan to seek out this speciality.
You can go for a walk in the Plava Voda area. The Staza stare pruge – Old Rail Trail route passes through the five municipalities of Busovača, Vitez, Travnik, Donji Vakuf and Jajce in Central Bosnia. Check which sections have been completed before your trip. The canton has 173 kilometres of trunk roads and 337 kilometres of regional roads; for specific journeys, check your chosen route and current road conditions.
