When planning a stay in Novi Travnik, you can first consider whether you are most interested in exploring the town center and its cultural offerings, historic funerary monuments or the mountain landscapes. The destinations differ in their themes, location details and the time required to visit. This guide will help you plan your stay and individual visits thoughtfully.

Culture and getting your bearings in the town center

The center of Novi Travnik includes the main square, promenades and industrial heritage architecture. The Dom kulture Novi Travnik cultural center is located in the town center and is within walking distance of the main square. It hosts the inBox Festival and Rujanski susreti, as well as theater performances and exhibitions. Individual programs and dates may vary.

The present-day cultural center is the Radnički dom workers’ hall, completed in 1956. Its original facilities included a library, rooms for various community activities, a cinema and a food and beverage establishment. The venue thus connects part of the town’s history with a current cultural program; if you are planning to attend a specific event, check its date.

Stećak necropolises and their different forms

Maculje in Novi Travnik is UNESCO World Heritage component 1504-005 of the serial site “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards.” The Maculje – Kameni svatovi necropolis contains 101 stećci, including chest-shaped tombstones, slabs and gabled tombstones, as well as 16 anthropomorphic cross-shaped tombstones. According to a legend, the cross-shaped tombstones represent wedding guests turned to stone. The Opara necropolis is listed as a historic area on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national monument register. It contains 42 stećci: 10 gabled tombstones, 29 chest-shaped tombstones and 3 slabs. Its three cross-shaped tombstones are 1.80 meters high and date from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Sebešić and Bistro also offer specific points of comparison. The Sebešić stećak necropolis contains 13 stećci, five anthropomorphic tombstones and a tumulus; it was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina on September 11, 2007. Bistro lies about 10 kilometers from Novi Travnik in the direction of Gornji Vakuf (Uskoplje), by the Grlonica River, and contains 26 stećci. The sites therefore differ both in the number and form of their tombstones and in their respective landscape settings.

Memorial site and historic architecture

The Smrike memorial necropolis on Čamića Brdo was built in 1975 in memory of about 700 civilians who were killed there in 1941. It was designed by architect Bogdan Bogdanović. From the center of Novi Travnik, Smrike can be reached in a few minutes by car via the road toward Vitez or Travnik; the entrance is on the main road and is signposted. As road conditions and signs may change, check the access route before setting out.

The Old Mosque in the village of Šenkovići is 8 kilometers from Novi Travnik. It is considered the oldest architectural structure from the period of Turkish rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was declared a national monument on November 14, 2005. Visitors interested in architecture and historic sites will find another, distinct point of interest here alongside the necropolises.

Rostovo, a cave and planning your routes

Rostovo is a mountain plateau in the municipality of Novi Travnik in central Bosnia. It lies at an elevation of about 998 to 1,100 meters; meadows, pastures and forests, along with abundant spring water, shape the landscape. Activities here include hiking, cycling and photography, as well as a visit to the Maculje stećak necropolis. Seasonal conditions may affect access and activities. To reach Maculje, take the road from Novi Travnik toward Gornji Vakuf; after about 21 kilometers, a 1.5-kilometer gravel road branches off to the hamlet of Seona. Check road conditions before your visit.

A challenging hiking option from Sebešić to Novi Travnik is listed as about 30 kilometers and around nine hours. This is a considerable amount of time to allow for when planning. If you decide to do the hike in the future, it is advisable to check the relevant details.

Another natural attraction is Vilinska pećina, below Vilinska kosa. It was recognized as a natural rarity of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1954. Its described features include a steep entrance, spacious chambers and numerous formations of stalagmites and stalactites.
