Kreševo can be explored through several distinctive themes: a medieval townscape, a continuing craft tradition and mountain landscapes of forests, pastures, streams and rivers. There are also insights into metallurgy and geology, reflected in the monastery collections and at geological sites. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses: culture and crafts, outdoor activities or geological history.

Town History and Traditional Crafts

Kreševo’s historic town area preserves a characteristic medieval urban layout. Another facet of the local heritage is the craft of decorating eggs with metal fittings, a traditional art that is still practiced in Kreševo. These decorated eggs are considered valuable local souvenirs and symbolically represent good fortune, maturity and new life. If you are interested in regional craft traditions, this continuing practice offers a tangible point of connection alongside the historic townscape.

Monastery Museum and the History of Books

The Museum of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Catherine extends over three floors. Its collections include archaeological and sacred objects, as well as minerals and crystals. A complete traditional blacksmith’s workshop displays bellows, a forge, anvils, hammers and other metalworking tools. The workshop is therefore not just a single object, but an extensive collection of equipment used in blacksmithing.

A different perspective on mining and metalworking is offered by a book in the library of the Franciscan monastery: it houses an edition of Georgius Agricola’s “De re metallica,” printed in Italy in 1657. The 477-page work is divided into twelve parts, contains illustrations and covers mining, geology and metallurgy. Together with the blacksmith’s workshop and the mineral and crystal collections, it offers different ways to explore the history of materials and work.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails

The landscape around Kreševo includes old forests and mountain pastures, as well as clear streams and rivers that have carved deep gorges. Well-maintained and clearly marked mountain trails are suitable for hiking, trekking and mountain biking. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. The BBK Kreševo mountain bike club organizes cycling tours and events and develops mountain biking infrastructure in the mountain areas.

These offerings have different focuses: hiking, trekking or cycling are the main activities on the mountain trails; the club’s work also includes organized tours and events. When planning, you can therefore choose between taking a trip on your own and exploring the activities of the local mountain bike club, without reducing the landscape to just one way of exploring it.

Geological Heritage

Oberska Cave is a protected geological monument. It is associated both with medieval mercury mining and with the region’s natural heritage. A forest path leads to the cave from Vranci; conditions along the route can change, so check them before setting out. The geopaths in Kreševo link geological sites with tourist attractions and enable visitors to explore the geological heritage. The cave and the geopaths thus offer different, tangible points of connection with the subject of geology.

Planning Your Journey and Event Dates

Kreševo is connected to Sarajevo by two road routes. A newer paved route passes through Lepenica; the older paved route runs via Kiseljak and is 48 kilometres long. This identifies two different road connections, one of which has a specific distance. This route information is not a substitute for planning your individual journey.

A fair for minerals, rocks, fossils, and precious and semi-precious stones is held in Kreševo every year. It brings together exhibitors and visitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the current event dates in advance.
