Fojnica: Thermal Springs, Monastery Culture and Mountain Scenery
Accommodation in Fojnica
Fojnica brings together thermal springs, medieval history and mountain scenery. The municipality’s territory is bordered to the southwest by the high mountain ranges of Vranica and Bitovinja; forests, abundant water and thermal springs shape its character. If you are looking for a hotel in Fojnica, these features can help you decide whether relaxation, cultural heritage or nature experiences should shape your stay. There are different ways to explore them in and around the town, including Reumal, the Franciscan monastery and several destinations in the mountain landscape.
Thermal Springs and Relaxation
Reumal in Fojnica is a modern, specialised facility for rehabilitation, relaxation, active holidays and planned sporting activities. Its rehabilitation services are based on radioactive thermal water. Above the present-day settlement, at the site of Banja, the remains of Roman works to capture and protect the thermal spring have been preserved. Thus, Fojnica’s character includes both a present-day rehabilitation centre and historical traces at a thermal spring.
Monastery, Museum and History
Fojnica developed into an important mining and trading centre in medieval Bosnia; the Bosnian rulers also operated a mint there. The Atik Mosque was built in 1551 and is considered one of the oldest mosques in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These landmarks span the economic life of the Middle Ages and the religious architecture of the 16th century.
During a visit in 2023, the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Spirit, its library and its museum were included in the tour. An inventory record lists more than 50,000 books in the library, including 13 incunabula. The museum preserves the Ahdnama from 1463. At the request of Fra Anđelo Zvizdović, Sultan Mehmed II el-Fatih granted the Bosnian Franciscans freedom of movement in Bosnia and permission to work among the population. The museum collection and library holdings are listed as movable cultural heritage in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mountain Scenery and Natural Attractions
Prokoško jezero is located near Fojnica on Mount Vranica, at an altitude of 1,636 metres, and is of glacial origin. The lake is 22 kilometres from Fojnica, with access via a gravel road. The lake is home to the rare endemic Rajzer’s newt (Triturus alpestris reiseri), and swimming is possible in summer. Prokoško jezero is managed as the Spomenik prirode Prokoško jezero nature monument.
The Kozice waterfalls lie ten kilometres north of the town. There are three waterfalls there, each 10 to 20 metres high. This means that two different waterscapes are highlights of the surrounding area: the high-altitude lake and the group of waterfalls north of town.
Summer Activities and Local Experiences
In summer, the Brusnica recreation centre offers horseback riding, mountain biking and walks on marked and maintained trails; seasonal offerings may vary. The centre also has a 33-kilometre mountain hiking trail to Prokoško jezero. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between the distance figures: for the Kozice waterfalls, the number refers to their location north of the town, while for Brusnica it refers to the length of a mountain hiking trail to the lake.
At the summer katuns around Prokoško jezero, visitors can try sheep’s cheese, kajmak, pita and bread baked under a sač. This seasonal food culture adds local dishes to the nature and walking experiences. Fojničko ljeto is a traditional festival organised by the Municipality of Fojnica for residents and visitors. In 2025 it took place in July; an edition for 2026 was also announced. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates.
