Municipality of Konavle: Valley, Coast and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Municipality of Konavle
A fertile valley, steep cliffs and historic sites define the Municipality of Konavle. The valley extends up to 35 kilometers in length and up to 12 kilometers in width. On the mountain side, the slopes of Snježnica (1,234 m) and Bjelotina border the landscape. Toward the sea, steep cliffs stretch from the port of Cavtat through Molunat to the Prevlaka peninsula and Cape Oštro.
Landscape and viewpoints
Distinctive landscapes meet in Konavle: the broad valley, the inland slopes and the steep coastline. From the summit of Stražišće on the Ronald Brown hiking trail, panoramic views extend across Cavtat, Konavle, Župa and Dubrovnik. Fort Sokol and the churchyard of Our Lady of Sokol also offer views across all of Konavle. Various endemic plant species and protected animal species are found along the Ronald Brown Trail.
Nature along the Ljuta River is also linked to the protection of cultural heritage. The river’s source and upper course are protected by the state as a nature park; the watermill is protected as a cultural monument. The mill complex includes eight watermills for flour, two for oil and three fulling mills. The system of so-called lower mills, built after 1550, has been preserved to this day.
Historic sites and collections
Fort Sokol is an important fortress dating from the time of the Republic of Ragusa. It was built on the site of an earlier Illyrian and Roman fortification. Those interested in the history of fortifications will also find a viewpoint overlooking Konavle here.
A mithraeum, a sanctuary dedicated to the ancient god Mithras, is located in Močići. His cult was widespread in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century. In Čilipi, the Museum of the Konavle Region displays around 500 ethnological objects, including traditional costumes, embroidery, other textile work, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments and everyday items.
The Franciscan monastery and the Church of St. Blaise in Pridvorje were built between 1423 and 1429 in the style of the early Dubrovnik Renaissance. The monastery was a pilgrimage site and housed an important collection of religious art. Traces of older burial customs can be found in the form of stone necropolises, particularly near the Church of St. Barbara in Dunave and in Mihanići, Gabrila, Brotnice and Pridvorje. Glavić House is an original house in Konavle, around 400 years old, and is listed as a cultural monument in the national register of monuments.
Hiking trails and activities
A choice of trails of different lengths and starting points is available for hiking. The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi trail runs for 8 kilometers through the coastal landscape of Konavle; side trails lead to swimming spots on the cliffs. The Konavoske stijene nature trail starts in Popovići and runs for about 4 kilometers above the cliffs. The stated trail lengths provide a concrete reference point when comparing the two routes. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
The Ronald Brown hiking trail starts in Gornji Obod and continues to the 791-meter summit of Stražišće. Its route, views and the plant and animal species found along the way make it another opportunity to explore the landscape on foot. In Popovići, Kojan Koral organizes half-day horseback rides above the cliffs of Konavle, with views of the Adriatic Sea.
The surrounding area also offers options for a range of interests. Cadmos Village, an adventure park in an oak forest, is located near the village of Komaji. The site includes a medieval stone cross associated with local legends. Check the current operating conditions before visiting. Near Cavtat are underwater archaeological sites containing more than 1,800 amphorae and pithoi dating from the 1st century BC and the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Near Molunat lies the wreck of the Austro-Hungarian cruiser Kaiser, at a depth of 30 to 42 meters. Check access conditions before diving.
