Gruda brings together traditional craftsmanship, a long history and winegrowing. The AR Atelier creates ceramics, Konavle embroidery and hand-painted silk objects. For more than 15 years, the AR Studio has held a Konavle embroidery workshop on Thursdays; check the current schedule before visiting. Silkworm farming is also part of the tradition: silkworms are raised at the studio every year in memory of traditional silk production.

Craftsmanship, History and Wine in Gruda

The parish of the Holy Trinity in Gruda was founded around 1450. The oldest parish church in Gruda is said to have been built before 1526. South of the church stands the Vito de Gozze house, which is believed to have been built before 1544. These historical references add specific points of interest from the past to the town’s living craft tradition.

Gruda’s agricultural character is reflected in its vineyards, olives, figs and southern fruits. The winegrowing tradition is represented, among others, by Bratoš Winery at the address Gruda 103. It specializes in the indigenous Dubrovnik Malvasia grape variety. If you plan to visit the winery, check before you travel whether a visit is possible.

It was built on the site of an earlier Illyrian and Roman fortification; the fortress and the churchyard of Our Lady of Sokol offer views across all of Konavle. In Močići is the Mithraeum, a sanctuary dedicated to the ancient god Mithras. His cult was widespread in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century.

The Museum of the Konavle Region in ÄŚilipi houses about 500 ethnological objects. These include traditional costumes, embroidery and other textile work, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments and everyday objects. The Franciscan monastery and the Church of St Blaise in Pridvorje were built from 1423 to 1429 in the style of the early Dubrovnik Renaissance. The site was a place of pilgrimage and housed a significant collection of sacred art.

The mill complex on the Ljuta River includes eight watermills for flour, two for oil and three fulling mills. The system of so-called Lower Mills, built after 1550, has survived to this day.
