Brotnice: Hillside Setting and Early Traces
Brotnice lies in the hills of Konavle at about 450 metres above sea level. The village is situated in a natural basin; prehistoric stone mounds and the remains of hilltop fortifications lie nearby. Together, these features provide two distinct points of reference: the basin and elevation describe the landscape, while the stone structures and fortification remains point to the area’s early history. Those choosing a stay for its landscape and cultural heritage will find a clear local focus in Brotnice.
Church of St. Luke the Evangelist and Cemetery
About 400 metres west of Brotnice stands the Church of St. Luke the Evangelist. This single-nave rural church was first mentioned in the 15th century. A first mention should be distinguished from a construction date: it marks the historical record, not necessarily when the building was erected. The church cemetery contains a medieval stećak necropolis. The site thus combines a connection to church history with a distinct cemetery ensemble.
The necropolis contains about 30 stećci dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Six of the stones are decorated with reliefs featuring figurative, plant-based or symbolic motifs; two bear inscriptions. As medieval tombstones, the stećci are the necropolis’s main focus. The cemetery remains a burial place, so visitors should behave respectfully.
Quarry and Route
The Voznik quarry lies between Brotnice and the cemetery of the Church of St. Luke. Several partially worked and unfinished stećci are visible there. The quarry and cemetery offer different points of interest: in the necropolis, the tombstones are seen in their cemetery setting, while at the quarry, the unfinished pieces themselves draw the eye. The condition of the visible pieces may change; check what can be seen on site before your visit.
For the walk from Mihanići to the St. Luke site, allow about 30 minutes along the former narrow-gauge railway line. Check walking times and trail conditions locally when planning your route. In spring, protected orchids bloom within the dry-stone enclosure. This brings together two different planning considerations: an approximate walking time and a nature feature tied to the spring season.
Općina Konavle as the Wider Setting
Across the wider destination of Općina Konavle, a fertile valley extends up to 35 kilometres in length and up to 12 kilometres in width. On the mountain side, the landscape is bounded by the slopes of Snježnica, which rises to 1,234 metres, and Bjelotina. On the sea side, steep cliffs stretch from Cavtat harbour via Molunat to the Prevlaka peninsula and Cape Oštro. Brotnice is shaped by its hillside location and natural basin; the valley, mountains and coastline describe the wider landscape variety of Općina Konavle.
Routes in the wider destination of Općina Konavle include the eight-kilometre Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi hiking trail through the coastal landscape and the Konavoske stijene educational trail. The latter starts in Popovići and runs for about four kilometres above the Konavle cliffs. These details make it possible to compare route lengths; check trail conditions locally.
The region’s cultural attractions also differ from Brotnice’s medieval cemetery necropolis. The Mithraeum in Močići is a sanctuary dedicated to the ancient god Mithras; his cult was widespread in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century. The Museum of the Konavle Region in Čilipi houses about 500 ethnological objects, including folk costumes, embroidery, jewellery, musical instruments and items of everyday life. The wider destination therefore offers different ways to explore history: archaeological evidence, medieval tombstones and everyday culture.
