Municipality of Jasenovac: Memorial Sites, Cultural Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Municipality of Jasenovac
The Flower Memorial in Jasenovac offers a historical perspective on the Municipality of Jasenovac. Nearby, the Memorial Museum, Krapje’s architecture and outdoor activities in Lonjsko Polje represent different areas of interest. When planning your trip, you can give specific priority to memorial sites, village history and outdoor activities.
Memorial Sites in Jasenovac and Uštica
The Flower Memorial was designed by Bogdan Bogdanović and erected in 1966 on the site of the former Camp III Brickyard. The permanent exhibition at the Jasenovac Memorial Museum focuses on individual life stories in the context of mass crimes. The museum preserves and presents materials about the Jasenovac camp and its prisoners.
The built memorial sites also shape the area: authentic buildings from the Ustaše camp run by the Kožara work group have been preserved in Jasenovac. Veliki nasip, also known as Nasip smrti (Embankment of Death), forms the eastern boundary of the memorial area. The Memorial Museum’s activities include working with survivors, exhibition and publication projects, and commemorative events in honour of the victims of Jasenovac.
A notice dated 24 June 2026 stated that the Memorial Museum would remain open during restoration work, following its regular opening hours and the procedure for registering groups for visits. Check the current visiting arrangements before travelling.
Uštica is situated between the Sava and Una rivers and was the site of a Ustaše camp for Roma from 1942 to 1945. The Roma cemetery has 21 graves and covers a total area of 4,292 square metres. These details give the site its own historical significance within the trip.
Krapje: Architecture and Everyday History
Krapje is a village of architectural heritage and a rural ensemble of international importance. Its traditional vernacular architecture is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments. Since it was designated a Village of Architectural Heritage in 1995, Architectural Heritage Day has traditionally been held every year in September. Local cuisine has also been offered in Krapje during the European Heritage Days.
The Palaić family’s Ethnological Collection comprises more than 170 objects, mainly textiles, wood and ceramics. It illustrates the way of life, clothing, livelihoods, knowledge and skills of a typical family in Krapje. Most of the objects are housed in a traditional two-storey wooden house built in the Posavina style. The collection thus brings together everyday history and the building style that defines the village.
Walking, Cycling and Group Activities
Almost the entire Municipality of Jasenovac lies within Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. The Staza graničara walking trail starts in the courtyard of the Krapje Visitor Centre. For cyclists, the 77.8-kilometre Posavska cycling route passes through Krapje and Jasenovac. The walking trail and cycling route offer different ways to explore the area; check local conditions before planning a trip.
The visitor programme at Lonjsko Polje Nature Park includes birdwatching in the Krapje đol ornithological reserve for groups of 10 to 20 people. It is available from April to August, on Saturdays only. The Krapje Visitor Centre also offers the Posavski konj educational programme for groups of visitors who have registered in advance. Group size and the limited availability period are important factors when planning.
