The Municipality of Velika Ludina is located in Sisak-Moslavina County, Croatia. In the north, the hills and slopes of the low-lying Moslavačka gora shape the landscape. Forests and agricultural land alternate, while settlements lie in the valleys. To the south, the area gives way to a plain along the Sava, bordered by the Česma to the west and the Lonja to the south. Around 16 square kilometres of the municipality’s southern area belong to the floodplain of Lonjsko polje. The part of Lonjsko polje that extends into Velika Ludina is part of a protected wetland, a Ramsar site and an Important Bird Area.

Cycling among orchards and villages

The 16.5-kilometre Ludinska jabuka is a circular route that starts and ends in Velika Ludina. It passes through Mala Ludina, Kompator, Grabričina and Katoličko Selišće before returning to Velika Ludina. Along the way, the route runs through apple and pear orchards and takes on a seasonal blossom character. As the flowering period varies from year to year, it is worth checking when it will occur before planning a ride specifically for that purpose. Route details may also change if signage or surfaces are updated.

The 23-kilometre Jelengradska is described as a second circular route. It passes through Katoličko Selišće, Ruškovica, Jelengrad and Gornja Vlahinička, and ends in Velika Ludina. At 23 rather than 16.5 kilometres, it is the longer of the two cycling routes described. Ludinska jabuka links its sequence of villages with the seasonal impression of the orchards; for Jelengradska, the distance and the listed stops are the main features. This lets you compare the routes based on their described courses and the distance you want to cover.

Medieval traces and sacred art

Jelengrad Castle dates from the 13th century and is of archaeological and historical value. Košutgrad is dated to 1334. A wooded ruin with a surviving fragment of the stone wall remains from the medieval castle. The two names therefore represent different historical points of reference: Jelengrad is characterised by its date and historical value, while Košutgrad is distinguished by its visible structural remains.

The parish of St Michael the Archangel is mentioned in canonical visitation records from 1715. The masonry tower of St Michael’s Church is considered a distinctive feature of the wider Moslavina area and is visible from a considerable distance. The altar of St Michael also reflects the area’s art history: it is associated with a work by the Straub family workshop in Velika Ludina, considered one of the most representative examples of late Baroque sculpture in northwestern Croatia.

KUD Mijo Stuparić preserves original Moslavina songs, dances and traditional costumes. The Proljetni koncert, Božićni koncert and Miholje u Ludini are associated with the cultural association. As the event programme may change from year to year, check the dates if you plan to include any of these events in your trip.

Apples and regional cuisine

The Municipality of Velika Ludina is known for fruit growing and viticulture, particularly apples; favourable agroclimatic conditions support cultivation. The Udruga voćara i vinogradara Moslavine from Velika Ludina organises the annual Jabuka crvenika as part of the programme for the municipal day. The cuisine also draws on regional produce and traditions: the Moslavacka priča restaurant prepares traditional dishes using local ingredients. At weekends, it offers the Moslavački stol, featuring Moslavina specialities and game dishes. The menu and dates may change; check before planning a visit.
