The Kupa, Sava and Odra meet in Sisak: the city lies at the confluence of the three rivers. Sisak-Moslavina County is also known for its museums, historic buildings, nature experiences and regional events. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in river history, collections, guided activities or festivals.

Sisak amid Rivers and History

A boat trip in Sisak runs from the mouth of the Odra to the point where the Kupa flows into the Sava. Sisak Fortress is also connected to the river landscape: it was built at the confluence of the Kupa and Sava during the conflicts with the Ottoman Empire. Construction began in 1544 and was completed in 1550. Sisak thus offers a specific historic site alongside the opportunity to experience the rivers from a boat.

Another landmark is the Old Bridge, considered an important part of the city’s cultural heritage. Together with the fortress, it offers two different ways to explore Sisak’s cultural history: a striking structure on the one hand, and a fortification on the other, with a clearly documented construction period and a location on two rivers.

Museums and Cultural History

The Muzej Moslavine Kutina is housed in a former country manor of the Erdődy counts, built in the mid-18th century. The museum’s departments include a gallery as well as cultural history, archaeology and ethnography. This brings the history of the building together with several areas of the museum, from art and historical artefacts to ethnographic topics.

The Gradski muzej Sisak aims to preserve and present the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Sisak region. Its scope extends from prehistory to the present day. Visitors choosing cultural sites in the region will therefore find both a museum in Kutina with four distinct departments and an institution whose stated aim is to cover Sisak’s cultural heritage across many eras.

Nature Park, Cycling Route and Hiking

The hilly and mountainous landscape of Banovina-Pounje can be explored by cycling, hiking or walking. The hiking trails on Hrastovačka Gora, Petrova Gora and Moslavačka Gora are considered suitable for beginners. In Topusko, thermal water of volcanic origin emerges from a depth of 1,500 metres. These regional nature attractions offer different points of interest: outdoor activities in the named hiking areas and a distinctive geological feature of the water in Topusko.

In Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, visitors can take a guided 32-kilometre cycling route. It begins at the Krapje Visitor Centre, passes through Mužilovčica and ends in Čigoč. The route is intended for groups of 10 to 25 people. A tasting of traditional products at a farm can be arranged in advance. The nature park’s educational programmes are also aimed at organised groups: preschool and schoolchildren can take part, and the programmes are held at the Čigoč, Krapje, Osekovo and Repušnica visitor centres.

At the start of the 2025 tourism season, quiet, environmentally friendly solar-powered boat trips were also offered on the Strug River in the nature park. The nature park’s offerings thus include different kinds of activities: a guided group route on land, educational programmes for organised groups of children, and the boat trips described for 2025.

Festivals and Special Experiences

In Novska, the traditional Lukovo fair showcases the city’s history from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The programme includes performances, songs and dances, as well as activities for children, food and drinks. Also in Novska, Adalbert’s Secret is a tourist LARP activity for adults and children. Children can take on the role of ghost hunters or treasure hunters for a day.

For more than two decades, Hrvatska Kostajnica has hosted Kestenijada, a three-day chestnut festival. Its varied programme combines culinary specialities with entertainment. Lekeničke jeseni takes place in Lekenik in autumn. Each event has its own focus: Lukovo combines performances with the city’s history, Kestenijada brings together food and entertainment, and Lekeničke jeseni is a seasonal autumn event. When choosing, you can therefore be guided by interests in cultural history, seasonal events or food.
