Municipality of Gvozd: Nature, Archaeology and Tradition
Accommodation in Municipality of Gvozd
An old watermill on the Trepča River, unusual rock-cut tombs and the rare bog birch site at Cret-Đon Močvar shape the Municipality of Gvozd. Archaeology, nature and tradition offer different perspectives on the destination and help you choose the themes that suit your travel interests.
Water, nature and landscape
The old Mlin Srnjak watermill is located on the Trepča River in the village of Kirin. It is considered a suitable place to spend time in nature and is ideal for barbecues with friends and family. This makes a shared outdoor experience as much a focus as the mill itself.
Cret-Đon Močvar is a botanical rarity: it is one of only two sites in Croatia where bog birch grows. This gives the nature theme in the Municipality of Gvozd a specific point of reference and sets it apart from the archaeological sites. Petrova gora is a regionally significant mountain attraction. It lies partly within the municipalities of Gvozd and Topusko and is considered partly developed.
Archaeological traces from different eras
Kiringrad is considered one of the more significant archaeological sites in Banija. The site was resettled at the end of the Bronze Age, around 1000 BC or slightly earlier, and apparently remained an important stronghold until the arrival of the Romans. The site also features unusual medieval tombs carved into rock. Kiringrad thus brings together historical connections reaching far back in time and a striking archaeological testament from the Middle Ages.
Stari grad Bović is an archaeological site dating from the 12th to the 15th century. At Veliki Petrovac, a fortress and Pauline monastery stand on a prehistoric and ancient archaeological site. These places represent different periods: Bović, based on its dating, belongs to the Middle Ages, while the site at Veliki Petrovac reaches back to prehistoric and ancient times.
Traditions and regional cuisine
“Đedova kosidba” is a cultural and historical tourism event that preserves and promotes the customs and traditions of Kordun, as well as the way of life of the local population. One of its highlights is a traditional mowing competition. Food and drink are also part of the event: visitors are offered traditional dishes from Banija and Kordun, along with good plum brandy. This brings together customs and competition with regional flavours.
The Stari Dud country estate in Golinja offers another connection between rural surroundings and cuisine. The estate includes a small petting zoo with domestic animals. It also offers traditional home cooking, prepared in “Aunt Ljubica’s Kitchen” for guests of the estate. If you plan to visit the petting zoo or dine at the kitchen, check in advance what is currently available.
