Nature Park and trails through the municipality
Lonjsko polje Nature Park extends partly across the Municipality of Lipovljani; around 40 percent of its area lies within the park. Lipovljani, Piljenice and Kraljeva Velika form the northern entrance zone to the nature park. The trails offer different experiences: they pass through the centre, through woodland or along a river, while a cycling route connects three settlements.
In Piljenice, there is a public tourist rest area with benches and an information board.
Hiking and cycling
The “Lipa” hiking route passes through the centre of Lipovljani and by the town’s main attractions and points of interest. It is 5.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The approximate walking time, together with the route length, gives a clear idea of what to expect on this circular walk. “Teninas staza” offers a different experience: this very easy, circular woodland trail is located in Lonjsko polje Nature Park near Piljenice. Check the current trail conditions locally.
The “Slikovite Piljenice” route passes through Piljenice along the Pakra River and by picturesque rural architecture and historic mills. The hiking trails therefore differ in their settings, taking in the town centre, woodland, the river or historic buildings.
For those travelling by bicycle, the 30-kilometre “Kraljeva ruta” is a circular route connecting Lipovljani, Piljenice and Kraljeva Velika. While “Lipa” is a hiking route through the centre of Lipovljani, Kraljeva ruta is a cycling circuit through three settlements. The route lengths, modes of travel and formats offer different points of reference for planning.
In Kraljeva Velika, Jame Gradine is a developed fishing and excursion area. Anglers use the site, while nature lovers can stop there for a break.
Cultural sites and local traditions
The Church of St Joseph in Lipovljani was built in 1772 and features Late Baroque stylistic elements. In Piljenice, the Toš mill bears witness to the town’s former milling tradition. The Slovak Ethno House on Željanska Street houses an extensive ethnographic museum collection and serves as a venue for numerous events organised by the Slovak minority. The church, mill and Ethno House represent different aspects of the local cultural heritage: architecture, the former milling tradition, and an ethnographic collection that also serves as an event venue.
“Antunovo u Kraljevoj Velikoj” is a traditional folk festival held every year on 13 June to mark the feast of St Anthony. The cultural, entertainment and sports programme includes the traditional Muntă after Mass, a kind of auction of local livestock. Local residents and other visitors usually take part. The programme may vary.
The “Lipovljanski susreti” takes place every year on the last weekend of August in the centre of Lipovljani and has been held since 1974. The festival includes a large ethno-gastronomic market featuring traditional foods in the central park. The two festivals offer different times of year for a visit: 13 June and the last weekend of August.
