Municipality of Dvor: Una landscapes and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Municipality of Dvor
For trips to the Municipality of Dvor, the Una landscapes and cultural history offer two distinct areas of focus. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to shape your stay primarily around nature or historical sites.
The Una and its varied river landscapes
The lower Una forms part of the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Near Dvor, the Žirovnica flows into the river. The landscape along the Una varies considerably: near Dobretin, it runs through a canyon-like stretch between steep, rocky banks, while near Dvor the river becomes shallower and calmer. In the Una gorge near Dobretin, tufa barriers, rapids and pools are part of the karst landscape. Thus, a canyon-like stretch and a shallower, calmer course sit side by side as distinct natural features of the river landscape.
Alongside the river formations, vegetation is another focus of the natural landscape. The Ljeskovac Canyon near Gornja Stupnica is considered Croatia’s richest site for a particular type of ophiolite vegetation. For several tree and plant species, this is the only known site in Croatia. If you are especially interested in plants, this offers a distinct perspective on the natural landscape of the Municipality of Dvor.
History at specific sites
The Ministry’s register, as of 4 January 2021, lists the Crkva Velikomučenika Georgija in Dvor, Kaštel Gvozdansko in Gvozdansko and Stari grad Zrin in Zrin as protected immovable cultural heritage. These three named sites anchor the cultural heritage in different places in the area. The area’s former uses are also part of its history: the Zrinski operated silver mines in Gvozdansko and Majdan; the former mining sites are in the wider Dvor area.
Archaeological traces go back further. Prehistoric sites lie in the wider Dvor area, in Javornik, Matijevići, Norde and Gorička. Remains from antiquity were found in Hrtić. For travel planning, these details can be distinguished from the protected buildings and mining history: they point to different periods and places rather than focusing on a single attraction.
Laudonov šanac and a landscape for recreation
In the Lebrenica forest, Laudonov šanac is listed as an archaeological site dating from the late 18th century. In 2023, the Municipality of Dvor completed an educational trail leading toward the Lebrenica fort site, also known as Laudonov šanac. The forest and the viewpoint at Laudonov šanac have long served as places for recreation. Dvor also has a centuries-old park associated with the heritage of the Military Frontier in Banovina. Together, these places represent archaeological history, an educational trail and a tradition of recreation.
