Municipality of Lekenik: Churches, the Kupa and local traditions
Accommodation in Municipality of Lekenik
The Municipality of Lekenik combines historic churches and traditional village architecture with experiences along the Kupa. There are also cycling routes, regional food and drink, and recurring folklore events. This lets you tailor your stay to culture, nature or active pursuits.
Churches, farmsteads and traces of history
In Pešćenica stands the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the Baroque style in 1751. It is considered the oldest church in the Municipality of Lekenik and is permanently protected as Croatian cultural heritage. The Church of St Martha in Šišinec also tells the story of the area's architectural history: it stands on a rise above the Kupa and was built between 1758 and 1771.
Traditional forms of architecture can also be discovered in the surrounding countryside. In nearby Dužica, farmsteads with houses facing the road and carved wooden Ganjek elements have been preserved. Letovanić preserves traditional village plots and a concentration of historic buildings near the Chapel of Saints Fabian and Sebastian. The municipality's distinctive wooden architecture is therefore reflected not only in individual buildings, but also in the layout of its traditional farmsteads and villages.
Another historical trace reaches far back: sections of the remains of the Roman road Siscia–Emona can be followed for about eight kilometres; locally, it is known as Petrinjski put. Lekenik is also associated with 26 March 1848, when Josip Jelačić learned there of his appointment as Croatian Ban. The Zagreb–Sisak railway, which ran through the area in 1862, influenced the development of the town. Lekenik also has a railway station.
Traditions and regional culture
Six cultural and arts associations preserve traditional songs, dances and customs. Recurring folklore and community celebrations are recorded for Letovanić, Lekenik, Vukojevac and Pešćenica; the events take place annually or seasonally. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates in advance. The Škofač Ethno Collection displays more than 2,000 ethnographic objects in three wooden Čardak houses and offers another way to explore traditional ways of life and crafts.
The Kupa, nature and activities
The Kupa and Odra rivers, as well as Odransko polje, are designated natural heritage areas. The areas around the Kupa and Odransko polje have been proposed for protection as significant landscapes. The natural setting is promoted as an experience for all four seasons. Boat trips on the Kupa are part of the tourist offering, and cycling routes also run through the Vukomeričke Gorice hills.
Other options range from recreational horse riding and wine or brandy tastings to truffle hunting in the forests of Turopolje, which is linked to Lekenik's tourist offering. Hunting is also considered a tourism activity in the municipality. A cactus nursery and wooden chapels are highlighted as local attractions. Winegrowing and gastronomy round out the offering. In the wider destination of Sisak-Moslavina County, the slopes of the Vukomeričke Gorice are also associated with vineyards and the indigenous Škrlet grape variety.
Tailor your stay to your interests
When choosing a hotel location, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore architectural history and village architecture, are you interested in the Kupa, or are you planning to cycle and enjoy tastings? These themes offer different ways to shape your stay without needing to combine them into a single excursion.
