Krapje combines cultural history with a clearly defined hiking destination: the Borderers’ Trail begins in the village and leads to the Krapje Đol ornithological reserve. Also here are the visitor centre in a restored Posavina wooden house and an ethnological collection about life in Krapje. This offers several areas to focus on when planning your trip: wooden architecture, a hike lasting several hours and the reserve’s spoonbill population.

Old wooden houses and cultural heritage

The valuable group of old wooden houses was the reason Krapje was entered in Croatia’s Register of Cultural Monuments in 1990. In 1995, it was designated an architectural heritage village. In 1995, Krapje was declared an architectural heritage village.

The visitor centre is located on the grounds of a restored Posavina wooden house. It includes a multimedia hall, a small gallery, a souvenir shop and sanitary facilities. You can also get information about Krapje and Lonjsko polje Nature Park there. Bicycles can be rented at the visitor centre; check availability before your trip.

Hiking and nature

The Borderers’ Trail starts in Krapje, heads towards the Orlinci pasture and continues to the Krapje Đol ornithological reserve. The 5-kilometre route takes about two and a half to three hours on foot. Flooding can change trail conditions; local conditions may also affect walking time. So check current conditions before setting out. For planning your day, you can allow for the hike as a separate section lasting several hours. The time estimate refers to walking time itself; any breaks along the route should be added to your individual schedule.

Krapje Đol is Croatia’s largest nesting site for spoonbills. This gives the reserve’s nature theme a specific connection to a bird species.

Another activity connected with the landscape is the Posavina Horse educational programme for groups. It can take visitors from the information centre in Krapje to pastures near Mužilovčica or in Repušničko polje; a guide or education professional accompanies the group. Seasonal visitor conditions apply to the programme, so take these into account when planning. The Posavina horse is an indigenous Croatian horse breed.

Collection and event

The Palaić family’s ethnological collection in Krapje contains more than 170 objects, mainly textiles, woodwork and ceramics. It illustrates the way of life, clothing and livelihood of a typical family in Krapje, as well as their knowledge and skills. This look at objects and everyday life complements the exploration of wooden house architecture by showing how people in Krapje lived and worked.

Krapje also continues the tradition of holding an event each year in mid-September for European Heritage Days. Check the specific dates for the year of your trip.
