Southeast Styria: Culinary Delights and Riegersburg
Accommodation in Southeast Styria
Riegersburg Castle stands on a volcanic rock, and trails lead to tastings, museums and activities around this striking landmark. Southeast Styria offers a range of starting points for planning your trip—from culture and hiking to regional experiences.
Riegersburg: Castle Rock and Culture
Riegersburg Castle is over 850 years old and stands on a 482-metre-high volcanic rock. You can reach it on foot, by funicular or via the via ferratas. Hochschloss Kronegg houses three exhibitions: the Witch Museum, the Castle Museum and the Weapons Museum. Check which exhibitions are open before your visit.
The Leopold via ferrata is also built on the volcanic rock of the castle. In addition, a climbing experience on 10,000 square metres of natural rock begins at Riegersburg Castle. At the foot of the castle, the high ropes course reaches a height of 10 metres; there is also a 3D archery course. The activities offer different options, from via ferrata climbing to archery.
Hiking and Cycling
The Culinary Hiking Trail starts in the centre of Riegersburg and follows an eastern and a western loop. One of these is the Zotter Loop: it passes the Zotter Chocolate Experience and has been awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. The Orchard Tour FB7 is a moderate loop around Riegersburg Castle. You can choose between a hike with two loops and a route described as moderate.
The Thermenradweg R12 can also be cycled in several sections and is signposted throughout. This gives you the option of planning your cycling tour in stages. Timetables and travel information for the Way of Friendship are available from the Austrian Federal Railways (Ă–BB), the Styrian State Railways (STLB) and BusBahnBim. Check the latest information for your travel date.
Tastings and Experiences
The Zotter Chocolate Tasting Tour includes more than 40 creatively designed tasting stations and 300 samples. The Zotter Cocoa Safari adds a themed connection to Tanzania and Uganda. Zotter’s Edible Animal Garden is described as an open-air experience featuring animals, an adventure playground and a petting zoo. Check the seasonal opening times before your visit.
At the Gölles manufactory, the offer includes a tour with an experienced staff member and a guided tasting of vinegars and fine spirits. Check the reservation requirements before your arrival. Tours at the Vulcano Experience World offer insight into Vulcano’s farming and include a visit to the piglet flatshare; find out about booking details in advance. These different formats offer practical ways to include tastings and insights into agriculture in your trip planning.
More Planning Information
