Deutsch Goritz combines pilgrimage history and archaeological traces with a landscape shaped by springs, vineyards, and forests. If you are looking for a hotel in Deutsch Goritz, these themes can give your trip a focus: churches and a museum tell of the region’s religious and Roman past; the Seven Springs Trail leads to places of water and energy.

Churches and Pilgrimage History

The Federal Monuments Authority’s list of monuments dated June 30, 2025, lists the Catholic parish church of the Immaculate Conception in Deutsch Goritz as protected by decree. The pilgrimage church of Maria Helfbrunn in Ratschendorf, Deutsch Goritz, is also listed there as protected by decree.

The history of Maria Helfbrunn extends beyond the church building. The Lourdes grotto was built above the spring in 1881, replacing an old wooden hut. Previously, the hut served two functions: it was both a bathing hut and the first chapel. This sequence connects the spring with its earlier uses and the construction of the grotto. After renovation work was completed, visitors were invited to a May devotion on May 1, 2025, with a blessing of the renovated church.

Ratschendorf Roman Museum

The Ratschendorf Roman Museum is housed in a former cooling house and is now a place to encounter archaeology, history, and architectural heritage. At the center of the museum room is a life-size reconstruction of a Roman-period burial mound that visitors can enter, containing five burials. The reconstruction conveys the scale of the tomb in a tangible way; the five burials are also among the specific details that define the museum’s archaeological focus.

To visit the museum, visitors collect the key from the Gasthof Fasching “Zum Hoferwirt” opposite the museum. Check the key collection arrangements again before your visit.

Trails, Water, and Nature

The Ratschendorf Seven Springs Trail starts in front of the church in Deutsch Goritz and leads to various places of water and energy in southeastern Styria. The Peterquelle spring is a specific stop along the way: hikers can sample mineral water from a fountain there. The trail’s places of water and energy are a destination in themselves, while the Peterquelle is a place to sample the water.

The Jaun wetland south of Deutsch Goritz offers a seasonal perspective on nature. In spring, it is home to a large population of spring snowflakes. If you would like to see this particular population, spring is the ideal time to plan your visit.

Historic Places in the Cultural Landscape

Die Wäsch is a place of cultural and historical significance. In the past, hemp and flax were dried there, and the village farmers’ laundry was washed. One of the Radkersburg district’s 34 Roman-period burial mound cemeteries is located in the Hügelstaudach woodland. Die Wäsch represents the village’s former work, while Hügelstaudach preserves archaeological evidence of the Roman period: two different ways of exploring the region’s history.

Deutsch Goritz lies in the heart of Thermen- & Vulkanland Steiermark, surrounded by bubbling healing springs and picturesque vineyards. Well-tended, healthy forests surround the town. Together with the Jaun wetland, these landscape features offer different perspectives: vineyards and springs shape the description of the town, while the wetland and its springtime blooms provide a specific seasonal connection with nature.
