If you are considering Tieschen as a travel destination, you can plan your visit around your interests in the landscape, winegrowing and history. The trails and cultural sites offer different highlights, alongside cycling tours and local places to eat. This lets you choose Tieschen based on what you want to experience, rather than just a single excursion destination.

Trails and landscape

Along the Sonnengesangsweg (Canticle of the Sun Trail), hikers can discover the praise of creation at eight stations, inspired by the prayer written by Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. The Wine Education Trail has a different focus: intricately punched copper panels trace the history of winegrowing up to the present day, and various grape varieties are described along the route. The two trails therefore differ in their themes: a spiritual motif on the Sonnengesangsweg and knowledge about winegrowing on the Wine Education Trail.

A nature trail leads through vineyards, meadows and forests to the Tieschen basalt fissure. It follows a vein of hard, dense basalt and shows how molten rock forced its way upwards in the late stages of the region’s volcanic history. Quarry workers exposed the fissure in the previous century. Alongside the cultural themes of the trails, this offers a geological perspective: the shape of the rock and its geological history are connected here.

Tieschen also has cycling tours along vineyards and orchards. They add a landscape-focused perspective to the themed trails: while the trails explore religious, winegrowing or geological subjects, the cycling tours run alongside vineyards and fruit-growing areas.

Cultural heritage and architecture

The Königsberg site is the largest settlement from the late Urnfield period, dating to the 9th or 8th century BC, known to date in Styria. In the Größinger Tanner, also called the pine forest, around 50 tumuli remain as traces of an extensive burial ground. The two sites differ in their function: Königsberg was a settlement, while the Größinger Tanner contains surviving remains of a burial ground.

The parish church of the Holy Trinity faces east and stands slightly elevated on a plateau on the hillside. Together with the two-storey monastery building attached on its north side, it forms a striking religious complex, with the bell tower as its visual centre. Its orientation, elevated position and adjoining monastery define the character of the complex.

Wine, dining and seasonal planning

The Hopfer Buschenschank serves a traditional snack made from its own produce. Guests can enjoy views across all of Tieschen with a glass of wine. As a seasonal addition after walking the TAU Weg der Riede, hikers can cool off at the outdoor swimming pool in Tieschen during the swimming season, then enjoy a snack and a TAU wine at a Buschenschank. If you plan to stop for a meal or visit the outdoor pool, it is worth checking the latest visitor information.
