Patzen: Hiking and Village History
Accommodation in Patzen
These topics offer different points of reference for making your choice. The hiking route provides information on distance, difficulty level and duration. The chapel offers a glimpse into the village’s history, while Patzenberg is also associated with a specific description of the vineyard. Before booking, consider which of these aspects is most important for your trip.
Hiking the TAU-Weg der Riede
The TAU-Weg der Riede is a moderately difficult hiking route covering 17.7 km, with a stated duration of five hours. These are different details to consider when planning: the number of kilometres indicates the length, while five hours is the stated duration. The moderate difficulty rating is another separate point of reference. This lets you consider the time required and the level of difficulty separately, rather than using the route’s length alone as a measure for planning.
The trail passes through the vineyards of Patzenberg. After a section through the vineyards, you reach the named stop “TAO-Ried Patzenberg – Rooted in Tieschen.” The Patzen Bridge is also a named point on the TAU-Weg der Riede. These names supplement the information on length and duration with specific points along the route. If you choose the hiking trail as the focus of your stay, you can take both the time involved and the named stops into account.
The chapel and the history of Patzen
The chapel in Patzen was built by the village’s farmers in 1834 and was most recently renovated in 1998. It is the oldest village chapel in the municipality of Tieschen. The two years refer to different events: 1834 marks its construction, while 1998 was the most recent renovation. Anyone interested in the village’s history will find both a specific connection to the building and a later date in the chapel’s history.
As early as around 1770, the administrator of the Kommende Fürstenfeld designated Patzen as a parish location and as the site for a church and rectory. This plan was not carried out. The plans made at that time and the chapel’s construction in 1834 should therefore be distinguished both chronologically and in terms of their status: the project for a church and rectory remained unrealized, while the chapel was later built by the village’s farmers. The place name also contributes to its historical context. Patzen is of Slavic origin and derives from the place name “Pacinje.”
Vineyard and wine tasting
At an elevation of around 360 metres, the Patzenberg vineyard has calcareous pseudogleyed colluvial soil formed from Tertiary sediments. This description brings together details about soil type, geological origin and elevation. Unlike the hiking information, this is about the characteristics of the vineyard rather than route length or duration. For travellers interested in viticulture and the location as well as the route, it offers a separate point of reference in the landscape.
The JUFA Hotel Tieschen, at Patzen 90, has a vinotheque and a gourmet shop offering wine tastings, including tastings on Fridays with a winemaker from the region. If you would like to include a tasting in your plans, check the times and conditions before your visit. This allows you to consider the hiking route, the village’s history and this hotel offering as different aspects of your stay, without conflating them.
