Deutschlandsberg: Castle, Wine and Trails
Accommodation in Deutschlandsberg
Deutschlandsberg lies in the heart of western Styria, surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests. Known as the Schilcher capital, the town is closely associated with Schilcher, a wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape, which thrives here. The castle and the town’s history, trails through the gorge and vineyards, and wine and cultural attractions give your stay a range of different focuses.
Castle, Museum and Town History
Deutschlandsberg Castle is considered a landmark and offers impressive views. It rises on a rocky spur, naturally well protected by its location. Archaeological finds attest to more than 6,500 years of settlement in the area later occupied by the castle—a long history of the place where the castle stands today.
The castle houses the Archeo Norico Castle Museum, which presents eight exhibitions. A treasure hunt through the museum explores the Celts, Romans and the Middle Ages. The castle thus brings together the archaeological history of the site and several historical periods.
The Old Town walk also focuses on history: it loops around the long main square, where 50 historic sites are identified and described. For travel to the town walk, the S-Bahn S6/61 to Deutschlandsberg or RegioBus 760 to the Deutschlandsberg Rathaus stop are listed. As timetables may change, it is best to check your connection before setting off.
Trails through the Gorge and Vineyards
Deutschlandsberg Gorge is a picturesque rocky valley west of Deutschlandsberg. The LaĂźnitz flows through it, and a footpath passes a hermitage that was never inhabited before continuing uphill to the castle. The gorge is freely accessible every day; sturdy footwear is recommended, and access is at your own risk. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Deutschlandsberg Wine Trail offers a different perspective: this 3.5-kilometre hike starts at the main square, passes through vineyards and reaches the castle. Information about winegrowing is combined with a wine tasting. While the gorge highlights the rocky valley, river and hermitage, the Wine Trail focuses on viticulture and vineyards.
The Schilcher Wine Road is about 40 kilometres long and runs through the districts of Voitsberg and Deutschlandsberg. Its route passes through Wildbach and vineyards on its way to the Schilcher town of Deutschlandsberg. Along with the Wine Trail, it offers different ways to explore the wine theme: a hike to the castle and a longer route through two districts.
Regional Products and Other Activities
Regional identity is also reflected in food production. At the Farmer-Rabensteiner vlg. Graf farmers’ oil mill, Styrian pumpkin seed oil is made using traditional methods. The Farmer-Rabensteiner vlg. Graf farm shop produces 60 different varieties of homemade vinegar, including pumpkin vinegar. These production details complement the wine theme with pumpkin seed oil and vinegar.
At the Bad Gams Kneipp facility, visitors can walk in cold water and take arm baths; the site is in the middle of the forest. Two hiking trails pass right by it. Here, Kneipp treatments and the forest are the defining features, while the gorge and Wine Trail each offer their own trails and landscape.
The Schloss Frauenthal Golf Club has an 18-hole golf course in the Schilcherland region of Deutschlandsberg. Holes 1 to 11 are in the castle park, while holes 12 to 18 extend into the hills of western Styria. If you are planning to play golf, check the latest operating information before your visit.
Castles and Theatre
The history of Frauenthal Castle dates back to the mid-16th century. The history of Wildbach Castle dates back to the 13th century; its façades and interiors feature rich Baroque and Rococo decoration. Wildbach Castle is not open to the public—a key distinction when choosing historic buildings to visit.
The theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg was founded in 1981 by several local theatre groups and formed into the “theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg” cultural association in 1986. Its main aims include progressive theatre that is formally and thematically engaging, the involvement of professionals in acting, directing, set design and technical production, and ongoing work with young people. The cultural offering thus ranges from theatre to the destination’s historic sites and walking trails.
