In Kornriegl, historical connections meet winegrowing and tour routes. Hof Glirsch and Jägerkreuz have different associations; for the routes, the locations and route details provided for each can help you find your way.

Historical Connections

In February 1945, Josef Krainer Sr. escaped an arrest ordered by the Gestapo. He then hid for a time at Hof “Glirsch” in Kornriegl. In 1948, he described himself in court as a political representative of the Viennese group “O5,” based in Kornriegl, Styria. An organization known as the “Kornriegl Battalion” also operated in the context of the Koralmpartisans. It belonged to a unit of Slovenian partisans operating in the Radl Pass area. These references concern different contexts: Krainer’s temporary stay at the farm and the classification of an organization associated with the Koralmpartisans.

Jägerkreuz: Tradition and Service Date

A traditional church service was celebrated bilingually at Jägerkreuz in the “Cathedral of Nature”; many visitors came from both sides of the Radlberg. A parish calendar also lists a Holy Mass at Jägerkreuz in Kornriegl on May 1 at 11 a.m. Check the specific calendar entry before making plans if you want to take the date into account.

Winegrowing and Scenery at Glirsch

The Glirsch Wine Museum provides an overview of the tradition and background of winegrowing. The Schilcher Museum Tour leads through the forest to the Glirsch Buschenschank, which houses the “Winegrowers’ Museum.” The Glirsch Buschenschank is situated on a hill near the Grenzpanoramaweg, or the Slovenian border, and offers views across the hilly landscape of southwestern Styria. The museum focuses on the tradition of winegrowing, while the Buschenschank is a place to enjoy the landscape views.

Distinguishing Tours by Route

One route with a stated distance and duration is the Turmbauerweg in the municipality of Eibiswald: a 6.3 km circular hiking trail that takes about two hours to walk. The duration is an estimate. Trail conditions and route details may change; check the current route description before setting out.

Several other routes mention Kornriegl or Hof Glirsch along the way. From Glirsch, the “Flow experience at the giant” circular tour goes via Kornriegl and Oberlatein to Feisternitz. The “Große Panoramatour, No. 106” passes through Kornriegl on the ascent from Oberlatein toward Weingut Glirsch. Hof Glirsch is on the route of the “Tour No. 105 – Around Kapuner” mountain bike tour. When choosing, you can use these different descriptions as a guide: a circular tour starting from Glirsch, an ascent from Oberlatein, or a route explicitly described as a mountain bike tour.
