Sankt Martin Im Sulmtal offers a variety of ways to explore culture and local history: from the changing programme at the Greith-Haus to Baroque architecture, archaeological themes and trails through woodland and meadows. Cycling and regional products also have their own appeal.

Culture from the stage to architecture

The Greith-Haus hosts exhibitions, concerts and readings, as well as film screenings and theatre performances. The programme changes, while the range of cultural offerings remains a defining feature of the venue. It has room for 400 visitors. If you are interested in a particular type of event, the current programme is therefore a practical guide for planning your visit.

The parish church of Sankt Martin im Sulmtal is a simple Baroque church. Only a few remnants of the Gothic church have survived. A painting of Saint Martin by Carl Laubmann, dating from 1745, hangs at the centre of the late Baroque high altar. The church’s Baroque design, surviving Gothic traces and a precisely dated work of art each represent different aspects of architectural and art history.

Local stories and archaeological traces

The Legends Trail connects stories with the places where they originated and with local history. The stories are therefore not presented in isolation: their connection to their respective places of origin and to the history of the area is part of the trail’s theme.

Along Archaeological Trail 2, archaeological sites lie between the localities in a landscape of woodland and meadows. A reconstructed mound in Otternitz shows the internal structure of a burial site of this kind and illustrates how the dead were laid to rest. These insights focus both on the structure itself and on the treatment of the deceased.

Archaeological sites are located along Archaeological Trail 1. On a hill, the still-visible ring walls of a former fortification have also been preserved. How clearly they can be seen may depend on the vegetation and conditions at the time. This gives you a choice between the stories and local history of the Legends Trail and the archaeological themes of the trails.

Trails, activity and landscape

The trail-signage system for the Greith Trails, designed by Anne and Peter Knoll, guides visitors along the right “Greith Path”. Stone benches and “landscape sofas” made from boulders from Röthelstein provide places to linger. The stones come in various sizes and are linked by wooden planks like bridges. The wayfinding and seating serve different purposes: one provides orientation, while the other offers places to rest.

The Sulmtal Cycle Route runs through the municipality of Sankt Martin im Sulmtal. If you are planning a bike ride, bear in mind that trail conditions and signage may change, and check the latest information before setting off. This lets you consider cycling as a distinct option alongside the cultural-history trails and the Greith Trails, without conflating the different offerings.

Styrian products and outdoor activities

At the Lorenz pumpkin seed oil mill, visitors can taste authentic Styrian pumpkin seed oil and products made with it. By appointment, the mill also shows how the seeds are turned into oil. A tasting and an insight into the production process are two different ways to enjoy your visit. As offerings and appointment arrangements may change, it is best to check the current options in advance.

The Krauss distillery offers whisky, rum, vermouth, fine spirits and gin, with a particular focus on gin. The range may change over time. If you are interested in its products, check the current selection before visiting.

Martinhof outdoor swimming pool is suitable for families with young children. Check the current opening hours before visiting. Alongside the cultural offerings, trails and regional products, the pool broadens the range of interests to choose from during a stay in Sankt Martin Im Sulmtal.
