Explore Eibiswald through several distinct interests: church and architectural history, museums with regional themes, winegrowing, and nature and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Eibiswald, you can plan your stay around whichever of these themes interests you most. The specific highlights range from historic buildings to viewpoints, providing a practical guide for planning your trip.

Architectural History, Churches and Museums

The churches tell stories from different periods. The parish church of Maria in Dorn dates back to an original Gothic building from the 14th century. The history of Eibiswald’s Marienkirche follows a different timeline: it was first mentioned in 1170 as a subsidiary church of Leibnitz and became an independent parish church in the second half of the 13th century. The two churches therefore highlight different stages of their history.

Secular buildings also preserve different chapters in the town’s history. Eibiswald Castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by the Eibiswalder family. The Lerchhaus, the oldest house in Eibiswald, consists of two houses that were still listed under two numbers in the old house numbering system and were not joined until around 1800. A valuable Renaissance hall has been preserved inside. House Aichberg 4, with its shift tower, offers a glimpse into the history of industry: it was built in 1857 in the industrial style of the time as the administrative and management building of the Eibiswald steelworks.

Together, the buildings in Eibiswald form an almost undisturbed ensemble, of a kind that is now rarely found in Styria. Visitors interested in the stories behind the buildings can also explore museums with different focuses. The Universalmuseum in the Kloepferhaus displays more than 1,300 exhibits on local prehistory, rural life and work in southwestern Styria, as well as Koralpe glass and steel production. The ÖAV Long-Distance Hiking Museum is located in the courtyard of the Lerchhaus. It covers long-distance hiking, Carl Hermann’s work as a pioneer and sculptor of long-distance hiking, and includes a portrait film about him.

You can find more religious art in the Church of Saint Leonard in der Eben: its interior features magnificent 16th-century ceiling paintings. In Eibiswald, architectural styles, interior design and museum collections thus offer different ways to explore cultural history.

Wine, Food and Events

The Eibiswald grape harvest festival takes place on the first weekend in October. It begins on Saturday with a traditional harvest thanksgiving procession. If the festival is important for your travel dates, check the specific dates for the year in question. Winegrowing is also the subject of the Glirsch Wine Museum, which preserves historical records that provide an overview of the traditions and background of winegrowing.

The Aibl oil press offers a practical and culinary perspective. Pumpkin seed oil is still made there according to traditional methods; the experience described for visitors includes a demonstration of the pressing process, a comparative tasting and a pumpkin seed oil omelette cooked in a large roasting pan. If you plan to take part, it is worth checking the latest visitor information in advance.

The panoramic tower at the Garber Wine & Culinary World also brings together landscape and food: the farm’s own tower is 13 metres high and offers 360° panoramic views. It can be reserved exclusively for a snack on request. If this option is important for your plans, ask about reservations in advance.

Trails, Views and Leisure

For hikers, two different details are worth noting: the North–South Long-Distance Hiking Trail 05 is a section of the European long-distance trail E6. The Hans Kloepfer Trail runs from Wies-Eibiswald station via the old little church of St. Veit to Eibiswald, passing the Kreuzkirche and the long-distance hiking trail marker, then continues through the “Silent Valley” to Aichberg. The two routes therefore differ both in their classification and in the landmarks mentioned.

Cycling highlights include the 3Eiben Kids Bike Park. It features the “Let it flow” flow trail with berms, passages and ramps, the “Blackberry Single Trail” with three downhill options, and the skills course in “Sumsi Wood”. As the layout of the facility may change, check the latest information when making specific plans.

The viewpoints each offer a different panorama: from the Sankt Pongratzen observation tower, the view stretches from southern West Styria to Slovenia’s Drava Valley. From the Buchenberg viewing platform, you can look out over the Graz Basin and the Leibnitz Field. Hadernigg Waterfall on the Essigbach between Hadernigg and St. Lorenzen is about 10 metres high. Another leisure option, Eibiswald Adventure Pool, has a modern swimming pool covering an area of 610 m².
