Discover Hollenegg through its churches, architectural history and design culture. Hollenegg Parish Church is located in the courtyard of Hollenegg Castle and is surrounded by two-storey arcaded buildings. Wolfgangikirche offers an excellent panoramic view of the hills of western Styria. There is also the annual design exhibition at Schloss Hollenegg for Design, held in May. For planning your trip, architectural history, event dates and seasonal visiting conditions offer different points of reference.

Churches and Architectural History

The first documented mention of Hollenegg dates back to 1163. This date refers to the town, not to the construction of a church. Other dates are relevant for the churches: Wolfgangikirche was built in 1494, and Hollenegg Parish Church was built in 1750 by the Maribor master builder Johann Fuchs. This allows the history of the town and the history of its buildings to be distinguished chronologically: 1163 marks the town’s first mention, while 1494 and 1750 are construction years.

Its location in the castle courtyard and the two-storey arcades give the parish church a clear architectural context: the church building and courtyard are part of its spatial setting. The construction year, 1750, adds a specific historical date.

Wolfgangikirche: Architectural History and Views

For Wolfgangikirche, an important detail in addition to its construction year, 1494, is a later alteration: it was reduced to the choir building that exists today by bricking up the chancel arch. The construction year and its present-day form therefore mark different stages. At the same time, the church offers an excellent panoramic view of the hills of western Styria. Its architectural history and the landscape views are two different points of interest for your visit.

Several Masses are held at Wolfgangikirche throughout the year by Hollenegg Parish; the main date is the second Sunday in July. There are other Masses during the year as well. If you would like to plan your trip around a service, check the parish’s current annual schedule.

Design Exhibition and Programme

The design exhibition at Schloss Hollenegg for Design takes place every year in May. The annual programme dedicated to design culture includes exhibitions, workshops and symposia. Each format has a different focus: exhibitions present works, workshops offer a hands-on approach, and symposia provide an opportunity to discuss design culture. The specific offerings may vary. Check the exact May dates and the current programme before your trip.

Visiting and Trip Planning

If you plan to visit the parish church, bear in mind that seasonal visiting hours are on Sunday mornings during Mass in the summer months. Check in advance whether access is currently possible. A forest path in Hollenegg leads to the Graz-Köflach Railway stop. If you plan to use this rail connection, check the latest timetable and service information before your trip.

Check the specific event dates or the current Mass schedule against your travel dates.
