Lemsitz: Wine Tastings, Trails and History
Accommodation in Lemsitz
Lemsitz combines wine-growing, tours and traces of history. You can choose different focuses for your stay: a wine tasting, a trail linked to the Lemsitzbach or a look at local history. If you’re looking for a hotel, first decide which activity you want your trip to revolve around. You can then choose from the options based on your personal travel requirements.
Wine-Growing and Tastings
In terms of wine-growing, Lemsitz belongs to the Stainz local wine-growing area within the Weststeiermark wine-growing region. This classification links a specific local wine-growing area with the wider wine-growing region. At Weingut Niggas vlg. Schleicher, you can taste wines grown by the winery. Advance booking by phone is required for guided wine tastings. So if you’re planning a tour, contact the winery by phone in advance. For your planning, these are two distinct aspects: the classification places Lemsitz within the wine-growing region, while the tasting is an activity offered by the named winery. A stay with a wine focus can therefore be based either on the regional setting or on a specific tasting.
Trails and Tours
Variant 1 of the Schilcher Tour North No. 702 passes through Lemsitz and follows side roads through the Schilcher wine-growing region. The GenussSchilchern-DORT Tour leads to Lemsitz and downhill to the Lemsitzbach. Along this section, you cross a bridge; you can also cool your legs in the clear water. The Schilcherberg Run also passes through Lemsitz. It then follows a forest and forestry road along the Lemsitzbach back to the starting point at Schloss Stainz.
Your choice depends on the route features you’re looking for: side roads through the Schilcher wine-growing region characterize Variant 1; the GenussSchilchern-DORT Tour leads downhill to the stream and includes a bridge. On the Schilcherberg Run, the stream is on the return route to Schloss Stainz. Two tours are therefore linked to the Lemsitzbach, but at different points along their routes: one descends to the stream, while the other follows it on the return along a forest and forestry road.
Traces of History
Local history offers another focus. The long-vanished ancestral castle of the Lemsitz family was located in what is now the cadastral municipality of Lemsitz. Lemsitz is also classified as a former fortified structure. Around 1190, the names Richker and Niklas de Lemsnice appear in the obituary books of Seckau Abbey. The date around 1190 refers to these mentions of the names; it does not date the ancestral castle. The castle has long since disappeared and refers to a former site, not a surviving building. You can distinguish between different questions about local history: Where was the former ancestral castle located, how is Lemsitz classified as a fortified structure, and which names appear in the historical obituary books? A fortified structure is a building with a defensive function.
