Schleinikon lies in the Wehntal Valley and is a rural municipality with extensive agricultural land and woodland. Meadows, forests and the Surb River frame the area around the village centre. Several distinctive historic buildings are part of the village’s character: the Zythüsli at the southern edge of the village, the granary with wine press in the historic centre, and the Schellenberghaus in the hamlet of Dachslern. You can get to know Schleinikon through its landscape as well as its architectural history.

Rural Surroundings and Outdoor Activities

The area around the village centre is well suited to hiking and cycling. Meadows, forests and the Surb River shape the landscape; extensive agricultural land and woodland also contribute to the municipality’s rural character. If you would like to focus your stay on outdoor activities, hiking and cycling are good options. The historic buildings offer another way to discover the village: they reveal different uses and periods of construction.

Historic Buildings in Schleinikon

The Zythüsli is Schleinikon’s best-known building and a half-timbered structure dating from the 18th century. It is a rare example of its type. Its elevated position at the undeveloped southern edge of the village gives it landmark status. Since it was built, the building has been used to house a fire engine; the local fire brigade used it until the 1920s. A small bell dating from the 15th century, bearing Gothic lowercase lettering, has also been preserved in the roof turret. The building thus brings together different periods: the bell dates from the Middle Ages, while the fire brigade used the building until the 20th century.

The granary with wine press stands in the historic village centre. Its inscription gives 1685 as the year it was built; it is probably one of the oldest surviving buildings in Schleinikon. The wine press is a witness to the economic history of viticulture. The granary therefore adds a tangible connection to the history of the local wine-growing economy.

In the hamlet of Dachslern stands the Schellenberghaus with its double barn, an authentically preserved late Baroque farmhouse dating from the end of the 18th century. It retains its original room layout and essential elements of the fittings characteristic of rural domestic life. These include tiled stoves in the living rooms and a smokehouse. The house and double barn form a cohesive historic group of buildings enclosing a rectangular paved area. Here, both the house’s fittings and the arrangement of the buildings contribute to the historic character of the village.

Local Amenities and Getting There

Opposite the municipal administration building is the village shop «Milchhütte». It has a small café, a grocery shop and a bakery. The «Althaus» restaurant is a welcoming place to take a break after a walk or cycle ride through the green forests and fields of the Wehntal Valley. There are various places in the village where you can stop for a break or a short visit.

When travelling by public transport, it is important to distinguish between the railway line and the station: the Wehntal railway line passes through Schleinikon, but the municipality has no railway station. During weekday peak hours, PostBus route 555 serves the municipality from Schöfflisdorf-Oberweningen station. The Wasen, Dachsleren and Schleinikon Dorf stops serve the respective parts of the municipality. From Schöfflisdorf-Oberweningen station, the S15 offers a direct train connection to Zurich.

A major Älplerchilbi festival is held in Schleinikon every five years. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific event dates before making your plans.
