Regensdorf between Katzensee and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Regensdorf
Regensdorf is a municipality in the Dielsdorf district of the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, and is considered the largest town in the Furttal valley. The municipality includes the villages of Regensdorf, Watt and Adlikon, as well as the hamlets of Oberdorf, Altburg, Katzensee, Neu-Hard, Alt-Hard and Geissberg. The municipality lies on both sides of the Furtbach stream. If you are looking for hotels in Regensdorf, you can start by choosing what interests you: the options range from the natural surroundings of Katzensee to local and architectural history and winegrowing in Watt.
Landscape around Katzensee
The landscape around Katzensee comprises two small lakes, bog woodlands and marsh meadows. It provides a habitat for numerous plants and animals, including many threatened or rare species. A new protection ordinance for the Katzensee area was issued in 2003. Marked paths lead through the landscape, and swimming is permitted at the designated bathing area. The paths and bathing area offer different ways to experience the site: the paths lead through the area, while swimming is restricted to the designated spot.
Land use also gives an impression of the municipality beyond its individual landscapes: 43.5 per cent of Regensdorf’s area is used for agriculture, and 23.6 per cent is forested. These figures refer to the municipal area. With its lakes, bog woodlands and marsh meadows, Katzensee is a specific natural landscape where the diversity of habitats and species takes centre stage.
Village history and architectural heritage
The Regensdorf Municipal Museum is housed in a historic granary dating from 1722. The museum displays objects relating to the village’s history and culture. Its permanent exhibition also includes an audiovisual presentation about various granaries in Regensdorf, Adlikon and Watt. It therefore explores both village history and granary buildings from three different localities.
The Sander Spycher is the oldest granary in the area. It was built in 1626 and extended with a second storey in 1638. Compared with the granary housing the Municipal Museum, which dates from 1722, it is the earlier reference point. Comparing the two construction dates places these granary buildings in different periods.
The Sonnhalde housing development offers a more recent perspective on architecture. It is an exceptionally good example of the use of standardised prefabricated components in residential construction. At the same time, it is considered an important testament to economic, social, societal and construction-technology developments in the second half of the 20th century. Together, these architectural history topics span granaries from the 17th and 18th centuries to residential construction in the second half of the 20th century.
Kultour starting and ending in the centre
The “Historic Buildings Regensdorf-Watt” Kultour offers another way to explore Regensdorf. It is 9 km long, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is rated as easy. Both the start and finish are in the centre of Regensdorf. Unlike a visit to a single museum or building, the tour can be planned around its route and approximate duration. Check local conditions before setting out.
Winegrowing in Watt
Winegrowing is another part of Watt’s identity. For several decades, the Rebhausgemeinschaft Watt has cultivated Watt’s vineyard in the municipality of Regensdorf near Katzensee and had the grapes made into wine. Unlike the museum, granaries and residential construction, the focus here is on the vineyard and the processing of its grapes. This gives Regensdorf a distinctive winegrowing attraction alongside its natural landscape and architectural history.
