Discover Oberglatt
Accommodation in Oberglatt
Oberglatt is in the Zurich Unterland, in the Dielsdorf district, around 15 kilometres northwest of Zurich. Church architecture, village history and the landscape along the Glatt offer different points of interest during your stay. You can also include an audio trail and several events with specific dates or seasonal connections in your travel plans.
Church architecture and local history
Oberglatt’s Reformed Church was built between 1962 and 1964, based on designs by Ernst Gisel and Louis Plüss. It is one of the Canton of Zurich’s outstanding church buildings of the 1960s and is of very high architectural and historical significance. The building is constructed from exposed concrete. A wide, cantilevered canopy rests on just a few supports; the tower is notable for its six large openings, which are slanted inward. These features make the church a striking example of the architecture of its time.
The Reformed vicarage offers a different point of reference. It stands west of the church in the historic village centre and was built in 1655. It was remodelled in 1698; the painted Baroque wooden-beam ceiling on the upper floor dates from this renovation. The vicarage is considered an important witness to art and architectural history. The church and vicarage thus represent different periods of construction and historical themes, which can be explored separately when learning about Oberglatt.
The village’s history can also be traced through clear milestones: Oberglatt was first mentioned in a document in 1153. In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the County of Kyburg; in 1442, it became part of the city of Zurich as part of the Neuamt bailiwick. The archives of the Oberglatt Evangelical Reformed parish also contain a documented deed from 1571 concerning Oberglatt and Hofstetten.
The Glatt landscape and walking routes
Oberglatt lies on the flat plain along the Glatt. Fields, forests and smaller streams shape the landscape; around 40 per cent of the municipality’s area is used for agriculture. The flat surroundings are ideal for walks and bike rides. The municipal boundary is also useful for finding your way around the map: the political municipality includes Oberglatt on both sides of the Glatt, the village district of Hofstetten and the area of Grafschaft, located on the right bank of the Glatt.
One specific walking experience is the audio trail from Rümlang to Oberglatt. It is designed for children aged 6 to 10 and has ten stops with boards and QR codes that provide access to audio stories. The route combines exercise with short audio stories along the way. The endpoint is around 200 metres from the Oberglatt, Bälen bus stop. Check the latest public transport information before planning your journey. For a visit to the Evangelical Reformed parish, the bus to the “Zentrum” stop is recommended; it is also worth checking the latest ZVV information for this journey.
Events throughout the year
Oberglatt’s boundary walk takes place in June or July each year; the exact date varies from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant edition.
