Dänikon: Views, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Dänikon
Dänikon brings together viewpoints, trails and local history. The municipality lies in the Furttal, south of the Lägern; the Altberg range forms its southern boundary with the municipality of Oetwil an der Limmat. To help you get your bearings: Dänikon is northwest of the city of Zurich and west of Zurich Airport in Kloten. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus mainly on views and outdoor activities or on the village’s history.
Location and Getting There
Dänikon is accessible by bus every half hour. On weekdays, buses run every 15 minutes during peak hours. When planning your journey, it therefore makes a difference whether you travel outside peak times or during weekday rush hours. Check the timetable before your trip.
Views and Trails
From the top platform of the Altberg observation tower, the view extends to the Bernese and Glarus Alps and far across the Swiss Plateau. The tower opened on 10 July 2010. The Altberg forest tavern also offers sweeping views: its garden restaurant overlooks the city of Zurich and the Alps. The observation tower and forest tavern can be reached after a 30- to 45-minute walk; check trail conditions before your visit.
Hikes are possible in the Altberg and Lägern areas, as well as along the Furtbach stream. These areas offer a range of destinations for a hike; the route that suits you depends on which part of the surrounding area you want to explore. Check trail conditions before setting out.
At the Rain viewpoint, the small playground also serves as a lookout point. In good weather, the view extends towards the Lägern and over Boppelsen and Buchs ZH. A recreation area includes a pavilion with a barbecue, a climbing tower with a slide and various swings. Next to the Anna Stüssi House, there is a playground with two animal-shaped spring riders, two swings, a table-tennis table and a table with benches for a snack break.
There is an 18-hole golf course within the municipalities of Otelfingen and Dänikon. In the region, cycling tours follow marked cycle paths through the Furttal. This gives you different activities to choose from when planning your leisure time: a golf course within the two municipalities and cycling tours through the region.
Culture and Local History
The Anna Stüssi House was once Anna Stüssi’s home. Events organised by the cultural commission, activities run by the theatre association and celebrations are held in the house. The Dänikon Cultural Commission regularly organises cultural events of general interest, including theatre evenings and concerts. As the programme changes over time, check the current listings for the dates you plan to visit.
The area’s building history can also be traced through several dates. The joint primary school for Dänikon and Hüttikon, on the Rotflue moraine, was built in 1866 as the two municipalities’ first joint primary school. A granary made of timber planks dates from 1774 and is among the oldest buildings in the village. The former Stüssi family farmhouse and inn, known as “Wirts”, was built in 1830 and renovated in 1905.
The village’s history also includes its former connection with Dällikon. Before 1843, Dänikon and its neighbouring village formed a single political municipality as a civil parish. Since the separation, Dänikon has been an independent political municipality; the Dällikon-Dänikon Reformed Church parish continues to exist to this day. This development distinguishes the political history from the ecclesiastical connection that remains in place.
