Rümlang between village history and the Glatt Valley
Accommodation in Rümlang
Rümlang is in the Dielsdorf district of Zurich’s Unterland, northwest of Zurich and on the edge of the Glatt Valley. The municipality borders Zurich-Kloten Airport and is very close to the airport. At the same time, Rümlang combines proximity to the city with a rural atmosphere. History, waterways and a range of leisure activities shape the character of the place.
Village history and local sights
Rümlang was first mentioned in 924 as a possession of Zurich’s Fraumünster Abbey. Fertile soil and the Glatt shaped the settlement; agriculture and livestock farming played an important role for a long time. This history is also reflected in the village today: the old village center is one of the sights visitors can explore. Other local destinations include the historic farms in Chazenrüti.
The Reformed Church of Rümlang is a listed building and is considered a landmark of the municipality. It adds a religious point of reference to the village center and farms, which offer historical connections. Those interested in the development of the place will find several different aspects: its early mention as a possession of Fraumünster Abbey, the longstanding importance of agriculture and livestock farming, and listed and historic buildings.
The Glatt, former channels and green surroundings
The Glatt and several streams run through Rümlang’s flat to gently hilly terrain. Around 51 percent of the municipal area is used for agriculture, and around 23 percent is forested. The green surroundings offer a variety of local recreation areas. The former channels of the Glatt are among the area’s distinctive landscape features: they are old river branches that have become separated from the main course. Here, water, meadows and forest lie close together.
The climate is also described as temperate, with pleasant summers and mild winters. Nearby, a walking trail passes through the protected natural area around Katzensee and continues via Chatzenrüti to Rümlang station. The landscape can thus be described not only by its agricultural and forested areas, but also by its waterways, former river branches and a trail through a nature reserve.
Observing and leisure activities
Weather permitting, Rümlang Observatory holds observing sessions every Wednesday: at 9:00 p.m. during daylight saving time and at 7:30 p.m. during standard time. Additional weather permitting, observing sessions are held on the first and third Sunday afternoon of each month, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The sessions therefore vary by weekday and time of day. Direct access to the observatory by car is not permitted; it is about a 500-meter walk from the Breitenstein parking lot. Take this walk into account when planning and check the details for your intended visit.
Hörpfad C is a hiking experience for children aged 6 to 10. It is 4.9 kilometers long, with a stated hiking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The experience includes ten stations with information boards and QR codes. This offers a different way to spend time outdoors than a visit to FLIP LAB Rümlang: the trampoline, freestyle and action park has 13 different zones, including trampoline basketball and a Ninja Warrior course.
Heuel indoor swimming pool offers an accessible swimming experience as well as a varied range of sports and leisure activities for the whole family. Swimming, a trail with stations and an action park cater to a range of leisure interests in Rümlang.
Culture and events
Rümlang Kultur organizes artistic and cultural events in the municipality. Artists who live in Rümlang in particular have the opportunity to present their works publicly. The cultural offering therefore includes both events and public presentations of local art.
