Lakes and paddling in the Fegen area

Around seventy islands and skerries, sheltered bays and projecting headlands shape Lake Fegen and the neighbouring lakes Spaden, Svansjön and Kalvsjön. The Fegen area lies in the southeast of Svenljunga Municipality and borders Halland and Småland. If your trip is focused on the water, the area offers several options: Lake Fegen and the neighbouring lakes are suitable for canoeing; the Ätran and the Fegen area are also designated paddling areas, with several kilometres of waterways and numerous lakes for canoeing or kayaking.

In the Fegen Nature Reserve, camping, pitching a tent and lighting fires are permitted only at designated campsites. An overnight stay requires a campsite fee or campsite coupon. If you plan to spend a night outdoors, take these rules into account when choosing a campsite. You can also plan your journey using specific landmarks: the Orrvägen and Solvik bus stops are on Road 153 towards Fegen, in the immediate vicinity of the nature reserve. As timetables may change, check your connection before setting off. The Ätranbaneleden ends at the nature reserve in the village of Fegen; check current trail conditions before your hike.

Trails through landscape and history

The Röstorps cultural trail near Örsås combines nature experiences with traces of early settlement. The easy walking trail is about two kilometres long and has several places to rest. Along the way, its themes include settlements, graves and fields belonging to Iron Age farmers, as well as 19th-century croft sites; twelve information boards line the trail. This lets you combine a short walk with insights into different historical periods.

The Strömsfors Storytelling Trail offers a different scale: it is about one kilometre long and has information boards in three languages. According to the trail description, it runs along the water and is easy to walk or travel along by car, rollator, pushchair or wheelchair. Check local conditions before planning your visit. At about one kilometre, the Strömsfors Storytelling Trail is shorter than the approximately two-kilometre Röstorps cultural trail—a useful distinction when choosing between the two cultural trails.

Gräne Mine also makes industrial history tangible in the landscape. Mica and feldspar were mined there from 1899 to 1932 and then exported mainly by water and rail to Germany. The open-pit mine is still visible and can be reached by a short walk from the car park. Four marked trails are named there: Trollstigen, Toppleden, Järnvägsleden and Geologileden. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Museums and local culture

In Sexdrega, the Åkersta Vin & Spirituosa Museum preserves a well-preserved liquor shop and an apartment from around the turn of the century. Both are shown by prior arrangement, so plan your visit accordingly. The locally produced mousserande punsch is also part of the area's history: it was a local speciality while the shop was in business.

The Hammarlind Museum is a digital museum dedicated to the Hammarlind donation, which comprises more than 3,000 objects. Online, the museum guides visitors through different rooms, people and related topics. Another way to explore industrial history is Strömsfors Bruk: Anders-Josef Larsson founded the enterprise in the late 1850s with the aim of harnessing the hydropower of the Assman to establish a textile industry.

More nature and cultural highlights

The Klevs Nature and Culture Reserve encompasses a park and garden landscape with broad-crowned oaks and beeches, a wooded steep slope, remains of a fortification and a boulder-strewn scree slope. The origins of Klevs gästgiveri in the reserve date back to the 1650s; its buildings were protected as listed buildings in 1988. In Bjällermossen Nature Reserve, bog, swamp forest and mixed coniferous forest meet. Notable features there include cloudberry flowers, black grouse and old, slow-growing pines.

Cycling also offers a way to take in the wider picture: the Sjuhäradsrundan connects Svenljunga, Borås, Ulricehamn and Tranemo. The Ätradalsleden runs between Falkenberg and Falköping and passes the Fegen area in Svenljunga Municipality. Alongside the individual cultural and natural attractions, these two named cycle routes provide useful points of reference.
