Målsryd can be understood through two distinct focal points: the local and architectural history, and the Lindåsabäcken Nature Reserve near the town. The development around the Målsryd farm, the opening of the railway station and the churches provide specific points of reference in time. The stream and the freshwater pearl mussels that live there are at the heart of the nature reserve. When planning your stay, you can take local and architectural history into account, as well as nature conservation and exercise. If you are especially interested in architectural styles, the development of the town or the protection of a stream habitat, Målsryd offers specific points of interest.

Local history between farm, railway station and road

The town developed around the Målsryd farm. The farm is therefore a point of reference in the history of the settlement, while Målsryd railway station provides a specific historical date: the station opened to traffic in 1902. Today, a busy road divides Målsryd; in the past, it ran between Borås and Svenljunga. The town’s history thus brings together different perspectives: development around the farm, the opening of the railway station, and a road that now divides the townscape and once connected the two cities.

Churches and architectural history

Målsryd Church was inaugurated on 3 October 1915. Its classical form has a simplified Neo-Gothic character; pointed-arch windows and projecting pilaster strips are among its features. A pointed arch narrows towards the top; pilaster strips are narrow wall features that project slightly. The form can therefore be considered in two aspects: the outline of the windows and the articulation of the walls. The altarpiece “I Galileens lundar” has a specific story behind its donation: Director Elis Aronsson donated it to Målsryd Church.

A later phase of church construction is represented by Målsryd Mission Church: it was built in 1975–1976 to plans by architect Sture Billhed of Ulricehamn. In chronological terms, this construction phase came around six decades after the inauguration of Målsryd Church. While the form of Målsryd Church is defined by its windows and pilaster strips, the construction dates and architect provide specific points of reference for the Mission Church.

Nature reserve and exercise

The Lindåsabäcken Nature Reserve was established in 2008. It is a municipal nature reserve near Målsryd. It protects the freshwater pearl mussels that live in the stream; their number is between 10,000 and 20,000. The chronology runs from the inauguration in 1915, through the construction period of 1975–1976, to the establishment of the reserve in 2008. This also makes it possible to distinguish the nature-related history chronologically from that of the churches. Unlike the churches and railway station, the focus here is on protecting a stream habitat.

A separate opportunity for exercise is the Målsryds IF exercise trail. The Målsryd kyrka stop on Råslättsvägen is about 600 metres from the trail. If you want to include exercise in your travel plans, you can consider it as a separate focal point alongside nature conservation and architectural history.
