Rydboholm between the Viskan and industrial history
Accommodation in Rydboholm
Rydboholm brings together the Viskan and nearby lakes with a landscape of forests and farmland. The town is also shaped by its textile and industrial history. There are two perspectives to consider when planning your trip: outdoor activities such as swimming, fishing and hiking, as well as cultural and historical themes relating to the church, weaving mill and power station.
Church and industrial history
Rydboholms kyrka stands on the eastern bank of the Viskan, on a green church grounds. It is a protected ecclesiastical cultural heritage site under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act. Built on the riverbank in 1852 for the Rydboholm factory community, it was commissioned and funded by the industrialist Sven Erikson. The church is therefore significant not only for its location by the river: its history also directly reflects the factory community.
Rydboholm [P 75] is designated an area of national cultural-historical interest. It is defined by Sweden’s first mechanical cotton mill, founded in 1834, and its associated industrial buildings. Sections of the Viskan around Rydboholm are designated as particularly valuable waters and are of great importance for understanding the breakthrough of industrialisation and the development of the textile industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Viskan thus connects the landscape and cultural-historical perspectives.
Rydboholms kraftverk was built in the Modernist style between 1943 and 1945 and has largely retained its original character. In chronological terms, the cotton mill of 1834 and the church built in 1852 came considerably earlier; the power station brings the building history into the mid-20th century. The sequence of building phases thus spans more than a century.
The Viskan, lakes and hiking
Rydboholm lies in the Viskan valley, near Storsjön and several other smaller lakes. Forests and farmland are also part of the attractive landscape. The area offers opportunities for swimming, fishing and hiking. The bodies of water and the land around them form distinct parts of the natural environment, while hiking provides another outdoor activity.
One specifically named hiking option is the Rydboholm Kulturled. Starting in Björnparken Rydboholm, it is unmarked and moderately difficult, and covers about 2.4 kilometres. When planning, take account of the approximate distance, moderate difficulty and lack of trail markings: each describes a different aspect of the route.
Fishing is possible in the Viskan at Rydboholm. The Storsjön and Viskan at Rydboholm fishing area is included in the municipal fishing permit. This distinguishes the general opportunity to fish in the river from the named fishing area’s inclusion in the municipal permit.
There is a barbecue area on the edge of Maden, in the middle of Rydboholm.
