Äspered: Cultural Heritage and Activities

Äspered combines historic architecture with nature and activities by the lake and on two wheels. Äspereds kyrka and the castle ruins on Holmen give the area its historical character; Sundholmen Nature Reserve, Lake Tolken and local cycling opportunities add to the picture. This makes it possible to choose a place to stay that suits a range of interests: history, nature, cycling or indoor sports.

Church and Castle Ruins

Äspereds kyrka was built between 1860 and 1862. Its interior has remained almost unchanged. The furnishings in the chancel—including the altar rail, altar screen, number boards and choir pews—have remained unchanged; the rising rows of wooden seats and wooden floor in the gallery have also been fully preserved. The construction period and these specific details give a nuanced impression of the church and its preserved interior.

On the island of Holmen in the Äspered area, visitors can explore the remains of an old castle. The castle dates back to the 15th century and once belonged to the noble Brahe family. It fell into ruin in the 17th century and burned down during a thunderstorm in 1706. At the church, the focus is on its construction period and preserved interior, while the castle’s history unfolds through its origins, former ownership and eventual end.

Nature by Lake Tolken

Sundholmen Nature Reserve lies in the Äspered area. This 20-hectare state nature reserve is on the western shore of Lake Tolken. Visitors can hike through beech forest in the reserve’s mainland section, in the Hägnagärdet area. Parking is available by the roadside at Hägnagärdet, near the access road to the nature reserve. The nearest bus stop to the reserve is Äspereds kyrka; from there, it is about 2.4 kilometres to the nature reserve.

Äspereds badplats is also on the western shore of Lake Tolken. There is a barbecue area at the swimming spot. The lake, the protected area and a specific place to stop for a break therefore offer different ways to enjoy your time in and around Äspered.

Cycling, Mountain Biking and Indoor Sports

The Two-Lakes road cycling route follows paved roads around Lakes Åsunden and Tolken and is suitable for both road bikes and regular bicycles. Its highest point comes shortly after the route turns off at Äspered. This distinguishes the loop from the local club’s mountain-biking activities: Äspereds IF offers MTB training for adults, mostly on trails around Äspered, which also includes skills training. Route details may change, so check the latest route information before planning your ride.

Äspereds IF’s youth MTB group is open to all children up to and including age 16; no previous mountain-biking experience is required. Training covers technique and basic skills, and includes practising riding on easy trails. While the road cycling route circles two lakes, the club’s activities focus on riding technique and practising on trails. Dates and participation requirements may change; if you are interested, contact the club for the latest information.

Indoor sports are another local option: Äsperedshallen is suitable for gymnastics, football, floorball, handball, basketball, badminton and volleyball. Use and availability may change, so check the latest options if you have a particular sport in mind.

A Local Christmas Tradition

Sjötorpskorv adds a culinary note to the historical and landscape themes. In Äspered, the sausage has reportedly been made according to the same recipe for more than 100 years in connection with the Christmas pig slaughter. For almost 50 years, Äspereds hembygdsförening has maintained the tradition of making Sjötorpskorv according to the same recipe for the Christmas market in Sjötorp. The cautious time reference for the older recipe tradition and the nearly five decades of work by the association relate to different aspects of this local custom.
