Vittsjö: Forests, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Vittsjö
Vittsjö combines a landscape of lakes and forest trails with historic sites. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around the trails, the natural surroundings or traces of medieval history. First consider whether you would rather stroll by the lake, hike through forest areas or include historic sites in your plans.
Discover forests and landscapes
The Ubbalt nature reserve lies on Verumsåsen, east of Vittsjön. The area is characterised by old beech forest. Areas with beech trees more than a hundred years old are home to a rich diversity of lichens and mosses. If you are hiking the Skåneleden Trail, you will pass through the nature reserve. Stage 9 of the Skåneleden Trail leads through varied forests to the lake district of Vittsjö. This brings different landscape experiences to the fore: Ubbalt connects the trail with old beech forest, while the stage description traces the forest path to the lake district.
Choose hiking trails by length and landscape
Vittsjön runt starts at Vittsjö station. The route is listed as 9.3 kilometres, or approximately 10 kilometres. This walking and hiking trail offers views of Vittsjön. Another option is Lehultsrundan: the 7.9-kilometre hiking trail passes through spruce and mixed forests, across clear-cuts and along old farmland. The landscapes change along the route.
Vieåleden is a seasonally open circular hiking trail of about 11 to 14 kilometres. It passes through deciduous and coniferous forests and along rapids and ravines. When planning, take its seasonal opening status into account. Skeingeborg lies along Vieåleden: a medieval castle ruin set amid nature, considered a unique ring-wall ruin about 900 years old. Its octagonal ring wall provides a tangible connection to the region’s medieval history.
Of the three routes, Lehultsrundan is the shortest option mentioned here, at 7.9 kilometres. Vittsjön runt is 9.3 kilometres, or approximately 10 kilometres, while Vieåleden is about 11 to 14 kilometres. Besides their length, the trails differ in landscape, and Vieåleden also has a seasonal opening status to consider.
Historic traces in Vittsjö
Vittsjöborg was built in the 1330s and destroyed by fire about three decades later. Vittsjö has been a spa town since the 19th century. These historical connections add another focus to the nature and hiking trails: alongside landscapes and routes, you can also include the town’s past in your plans.
Lakes and fishing
The Vittsjön fishing area includes Lillasjö, Högholmsjön, Oresjön, Mellomsjön, Pickelsjön, Lehultasjön and Hårsjön. It also includes Gustav Adolf-ån and part of Vieån. Vittsjöhallen and Vittsjö Camping sell fishing permits for Vittsjön. If you are interested in fishing, your local plans can take into account both the waters included in the fishing area and two places to obtain fishing permits.
Regional setting and getting there
Vittsjö has good connections by Pågatågen trains. The town is close to Hässleholm. Vittsjö-Verum Pastorate is in northern Skåne, on the border with Småland, about 30 kilometres north of Hässleholm. This regional description refers to the pastorate. For your stay, you can consider the trails, the lake, the historical connections and—depending on your travel interests—the fishing area as different points of focus.
