Discover Sösdala: History, nature and trails
Accommodation in Sösdala
Sösdala combines well-preserved local history with archaeological traces and opportunities to enjoy nature in the surrounding area. Railway buildings, trails and seasonal activities at Bosarpasjön offer different ways to shape your trip. You can decide whether you are most interested in the history of the village, historic sites or spending time outdoors.
The railway station and local history
Sösdala retains the character of a village shaped by small-scale farming; many farmsteads and other buildings are well preserved. The railway settlement adds a distinctive touch, embodying the ideal of a settlement from the early railway era. The red-brick station building dates from 1863 and remains almost in its original condition. If you are interested in architecture, you can distinguish two historic influences here: the farming village and the settlement from the early railway era.
Vannaröd Castle also offers a tangible insight into the area's architectural history. Baron Christian Barnekow had it built in the late 19th century as a copy of the childhood home of his Scottish wife, Agnes Sofia Montgomery. Today, the castle is used as a restaurant and event venue. A statue in the Esplanade in the centre of Sösdala commemorates Otto Lindblad, also known as the “father of student singing”.
Cultural history in the surrounding area
Near Sösdala lies Vätteryds gravfält, Skåne's largest and best-preserved burial ground with upright stones. It features both ship settings and square stone settings, as well as traces of settlements from the Neolithic period. The variety of forms makes the site interesting if you want to explore archaeological traces from different periods.
Nature, trails and seasons
Maglö ekar Nature Reserve is located near Sösdala. Its landscape consists of gently rolling pastureland with old oaks, some of which are more than 500 years old. There is parking opposite Maglö Manor. An easy farm track leads a short way into the reserve, and the pastureland is easy to walk across.
At Vannaröds Ängskrona on the edge of Sösdala, many night-scented stocks bloom in June and July. The intensity of the bloom can vary. This information is particularly useful when planning your visit if you want to see the plant in bloom.
The Skåneleden trail passes through Sösdala. A hiking trail also passes Vannaröd Castle and continues to Lillsjödal, where you can spend the night in a wind shelter. The distance from Sösdala to the Lillsjödal campsite is approximately three kilometres. Before setting out, check the current condition of the trail and wind shelter, as the facilities may change. A lit, three-kilometre circular trail also starts in Vannaröd Castle Park. If you walk about 7.5 kilometres north from Sösdala, you will reach the unique Hovdala trail system at Nösdala and Brönnestad.
Bosarpasjön in different seasons
Bosarpasjön has been an important recreational area since the mid-20th century, and several of its facilities are well preserved. In summer, there is a kiosk and an approximately 20-metre-long bathing jetty at the swimming area. Other facilities include a miniature golf course, a nearby toilet, parking, a shower and a barbecue area. As visitor facilities may change, check the current information before your visit.
Activities at the lake depend on the season: the bathing jetty and kiosk are available in summer. In very cold winters, ice skating may be an option, provided the ice conditions are safe. Sösdala is accessible by Pågatågen regional trains; include the latest timetables in your travel plans.
