Finja is a destination for anyone who would like to include Romanesque architecture, hiking trails and nature observation in their plans. Finja Church is a historic focal point; the Finjasjöleden and other trails offer hiking opportunities. There is an observation tower at the boat harbour, where you can watch waterbirds. When choosing a hotel in Finja, you can consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.

Finja Church: Architecture and Murals

Finja Church is dated to the latter part of the 1130s. Its Romanesque design comprises a nave, chancel and east-facing apse. These clearly defined parts give the church a distinctive architectural form and make it a point of interest for travellers interested in medieval church architecture.

The Romanesque limestone murals are also part of the church’s history: they were uncovered in 1932 and dated to around 1140. These dates relate to different aspects—the dating of the church building and that of the murals. 1932, in turn, refers to their uncovering, not when they were created. Finja is therefore associated with several art-historical milestones that need not be confused with one another.

Hiking Trails Around Lake Finjasjön

The Finjasjöleden trail around Lake Finjasjön is marked in pink and passes Finja Church, which dates from the 12th century. The route described thus combines a walk around the lake with a cultural and historical landmark. The Hovdalaleden, Finjasjöleden and Skåneleden North–South trails also run near Finja and Mölleröd, north of Lake Finjasjön. These routes provide different reference points for planning: the Finjasjöleden is described as a circular route around the lake, while the three trail names identify the area near Finja and Mölleröd.

The trail markers’ colours also help distinguish the information. Pink markers belong to the Finjasjöleden; orange markers indicate the Skåneleden North–South. From the stop in Finja, it is only a few hundred metres to these orange markers.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Around

Skånetrafiken bus route 511 serves the Hässleholm–Örkelljunga route. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. In Finja by, there is parking south of Finja Church; a sign points to the observation tower at Finja’s boat harbour.

There is also a time-specific caveat to bear in mind when planning your route. Municipal information dated 2 April 2025 reported that the GPX files for the Finjasjöleden and Hovdalaleden did not match the actual routes. It also stated that the Alslingan in the north-eastern part of the trail system would be dismantled; the markers in the terrain instead led through Finja by. Check the current route before relying on that earlier warning or on GPX files.

Birdwatching and Traces of Historic Routes

The observation tower at the boat harbour is another point of interest for nature observation. Various waterbirds can be seen there; it may also be possible to spot an osprey or a western marsh harrier. Such sightings are seasonal and variable. If birdlife is important to your trip, you can make this viewpoint a focus in its own right alongside the hiking trails.

The old road between Finja and Vankiva offers another perspective on the area’s history. On a ridge, it has partly retained its historic course. Alongside the medieval church, this road points to another layer of history: the former route between the two places mentioned.
